...begin timing yourself right now. How many of the ten commandments can you name in the next three minutes?

I predict that the number of responses to this question will be low.

At least one of you is wondering what my point is. My point is that there are many of us who say that the commandments are so important that they should be publically displayed, but who don't believe they're important enought for us to memorize them personally.

And for those of you asking if I can quote the ammendments to the constitution and whatever else, I'm not claiming that these things are important in the way that Christians who maintain that the commandments should be posted publically are claiming that they are important.

So much for my prediction about your responses...good turn out.

If the commandments are not in your heart they are are not going to make a difference on a wall. I think it would be good that they are posted but it is the job of the parents to teach thier young proper manners and etiquette found in Exodus 20.

The two main commandments based on the ten are Love the Lord with all you have and all you've got and love your neighbor as yourself and if people did this more often this world would be a better place.

I had to memorize them in 2nd grade (private school). I can rattle off all 10, both Catholic and Protestant numberings. It's hard not to know them as a practicing Catholic, because the pre-confessional examination of conscience ritual revolves around the 10 Commandments.

I also know which chapters of which books of the Bible have the 3 lists of commandments, including the *only* decalogue that's actually called "the ten commandments" by the Bible itself, although the list is unrecognizable to most Christians.

About public places: I think you need to be more careful about your wording. I have no probem with the 10 Commandments posted in public places, and neither do the American courts. I do have a problem with the 10 commandments posted in government venues or with government funds. The former (as i see it) is protected in America by the prohibition clause of the 1st Amendment; the latter is prohibited by the establishment clause. All civil libertarians should know this critical difference. (I find it infuriating, or sometimes comical, when a Bible thumper doesn't know the difference.)

I don't care if they post the ten commandments in a public place; I think anyone that wants to do so has that right as making a display of the ten commandments is not making a law, and the constition says "congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohiting the free exercise thereof."

Well, depends if you want the Jewish version, the Catholic version or the Protestant version, there are 3 different versions because it is unclear where one "commandment" ends and the other begins, however since I am Protestant I will promote the Protestant view...

1. Shall Have no God Before Me
2. Make no Graven Images
3. Do not use the Lord's Name in vain.
4. Remember the Sabbath
5. Honor your father and mother
6. Shall not murder
7. Shall not adulter
8. Shall not steal
9. Shall not bear false witness
10. Shall not covet neighbor's wife/husband or belongings

Why should they be publicly posted it is forcing religion down innocent peoples throat. Why should anyone quote the 10 commandments to you are you judge jurry and crucifier? can you repeat the first 3 amendments within 3 sec?

1.Tho shall not preach: people are not listening
2.Tho shall not Condemn unbelievers to hell: we don’t believe in one
3.Tho shall not put hateful statments or questions that prevoke preaching every 2.5 seconds on any site.
4.Tho shall keep an open mind ( goes along way)
5.Tho shall make sure that if you are bashing someone that you know how to spell.
6.Tho….hmm I guess I forgot the rest of them

I can't and why care! I am 42 years old and I am not going to change.

Don't you people hand out enough crap that I ain't gonna read. Hey and what's with putting John 3:16 on bathroom stalls. Do you respect god that much that you preach about him in the shizzer.

I was going to write a bunch of crap about this but then I would be like you.

We each have our own opinion and your not gonna change the majority of us.

Have a wonderful day!

Thou shalt not kill
Thou shalt not commit adultery

i don't quiet see the point you are trying to make here. do you think if i write them down its a reason supporting that they should be displayed in public locations?
have you read the constitution but i bet you probably remember more parts of Borat than the constitution so by the same logic Borat should be the constitution?

The Ten Commandments -- the Catholic version:

II. You shall not take the name of the Lord in vain.

III. Keep holy the Sabbath day.

IV. Honor your mother and your father.

V. You shall not kill.

VI. You shall not commit adultery.

VII. You shall not steal.

VIII. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

IX. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife.

X. You shall not covet your neighbor's goods.

OK, these will be out of order because I am working from memory:

1) I am the Lord thy God. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
2) Thou shalt do no murder.
3) Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's goods (oxen, asses, servants, etc.)
4) Thou shalt make no graven images of anything above earth, below the earth, etc.
5) Thou shalt not commit adultery.
6) Thou shalt honor thy father and mother.
7) Thou shalt not steal.
8) Thou shalt not take My Name in vain.
9) Thou shalt remember the Sabbath to keep it holy.
10) ??? (Heck if I can remember.)

False witness. . .that's the one I missed. Well, 9 out of 10 ain't too bad.
