Chicago is known for neighborhood places - - downtown is . .ok - - here are some place I would recommend
Downtown (and near downtown)
Wildfire - Steak
Carnival - Brazilian
Sushi Wabi
Sushi Samba
Frontera Grill - Mexican
Zocalo - Mexican (this place is new and huge so its not as full as it deserves to be)
Outside of Downtown here are some suggestions that are worth a cab ride
In Lincoln Park/Lakeview
Mia Francesca - Italian (try Francesca Forno in Bucktown for Antipasti)
Rose Angelis -Italian
Tango Sur - Argentinian
Socca - American Mix
In Lincoln Square
Tank (for Sushi)
Bistro Campagne (French)
In Bucktown
Feast (American)
Coast (Sushi - BYOB)
Las Palmas (Mexican)

You must must must get Chicago Pizza.. Giordano's is very good, so is Pizzeria Uno/Duo.. and Lou Malnati's (plus they ship anywhere in the US) are my favs..
You want a really nice dinner? The Signature Room on the 95th Floor.. it's in the John Hancock building.
Other great dinners are (still pricey) Chicago Chop House, Wildfire (any location), Zapatista if you want Mexican (not terribly pricey), the Parthenon (not sure for prices) for Greek, or Maxwell Street for dirt cheap eats.. just watch your back! But they have the best polishs and pork chop sanwiches..
Enjoy!!

GREEKTOWN. Located in Chicago's Greektown, Greek Islands separates itself from the pack thanks to its festive atmosphere and professional waitstaff. Indeed, this flavorful restaurant has managed to garner a fair amount of local praise and, with delicious servings of dolmades, moussaka, and lamb kokkinisto, it's easy to see why. If seafood is more your style, fresh lavraki is flown in daily, and broiled octopus is ideal for more adventurous appetites. Reservations are suggested.

GREEKTOWN. This restaurant stays open late, feeding hungry patrons classic Greek dishes after other restaurants have shut their doors. The menu includes a host of traditional mezes – try the platter of sausage, liver, sweetbreads, and meatballs or the spinach cheese pie. Main selections offer a delectable roster of lamb, vegetable, potato, and chicken dishes. Try the chicken karama, chicken simmered with tomatoes and herbs and served with rice pilafi or okra. The interior walls are adorned with Greek landscapes. Casual dress.

Last time I was there, Hard Rock Cafe was great and they have a tremendous collection of rock guitars including Hendrix, Clapton, Hammet, Vai, etc.... Plus you can buy a groovy Pilsner and start your collection for all the Hard Rocks....cool stuff! Food was great too!
Any chicago style pizza is nice too; bring an appetite.

Kevin at 7 West Hubbard. An infusion restaurant with a good wine list and menu changes daily. Quietly elegant with excellent service. They have their own web site so you can check out a sample menu and prices. Actually ate there again tonight..

if you go up north to Andersonville, I recommend Calo at 5345 N. Clark (just North of Foster) for great italian food at reasonable prices. If money is no object, I agree with the Signature Room at the 95th of the Hancock...an experience and view you will never forget.

When in doubt go to Chinatown.
Great food & it won't cost you much.
And on the drive home when you start to get
hungry, stop at White Castle for a sack.
