I just a new digital camera yesterday (samsung s630) and it shuts off w/o me telling it to...and the focus/lens thingy stays out! What do I do? Chuck it in the pan?

I am thinking you have an energy saving feature on the camera that turns off the LCD screen and viewfinder after a certain amount of time of not touching any buttons. Usually default is set at 1 minute. It's just turning off the screen and viewfinder, not the whole camera, that is why the lens stays out.

Look in the manual that came with the camera, and you should find how to change the time on this feature or turn it off.

When it goes off like that, it should go back on as soon as you touch any button or lever on the camera.

If this isn't what it is, take the camera back for an exchange.
