I have two peach faced love birds.
They are about 3 years old.
One (maybe both) keeps trying to tip over, pull out, it's water bowl. I noticed this and changed the water, thinking maybe they wanted some fresh stuff. It kept doing it. You think it just wants attention??
(say it because not sexed, don't know if male or female)
Thanx.

I should be more clear. The water bowl is pretty large. It is metal. The bird was tipping it over with it's beak.
They also have another covered, smaller water container.

My Green cheek conures do the exact same thing! It's frustrating, isn't it?
If a bird tips over their water bowl like this it's because it's FUN! A pain in the **** for the rest of us, but the birds think it's a great game. To them a water bowl -especially if its freshly filled- is another toy top be tugged, pooped on and eventually flipped over. I had to drill holes in my water cups and tie them to the cage bars or I'm refilling the things every five minutes. Well, every five minutes when the stinkers aren't bathing in it then dunking their pellets into the water and attempting to drink the mess. GHAH!

Like someone else said lovebird are clowns. The bird could be bored and find that fun. You said it was metal so it may see its reflection in the bowl or some kind or reflection. So it really could be trying to play with what it sees.
I have a lovebird as well and he loves to play in water. He has foot toys and he puts those in his water bowl. He also puts all a certain color of food in his water bowl. He just has a fascination with water.
What you can do so the bird doesn't tip it over is buy one of those dishes that screws on the outside. If you can't find any in a pet store, www.drsfostersmith.com has some. The dishes that just hook on the side may not work. My parakeet found out how to dump those as well.
I think the may reason your bird is doing this is out of boredom. Get him a new toy and see how he reacts. Not just change the toys in his cage, but a totally different one that he has never seen.

Lovebirds are clowns. I've had them for years and never had a water bowl in the cage. Yours are use to it now, but they can learn to change quickly to a water bottle that attaches to the outside of the cage. The spout goes through the bars on the cage and the birds hit their beak on a little roller ball that dispenses water when they hit it. Change the water in it every 3 days so it doesn't get "old" and the birds will love it better. Your bird is probably knocking off the bowl trying to bathe in it. If your birds like bathing in the water, you can give then a shallow bowl on the bottom of their cage every other day to play in.

The bird(s) may be perching on the bowl trying to take a bath. Instead of a bowl use the type of water cup that hangs tight into the bars of the cage.

try putting a saucer of warm water in the bottom of the cage . The bird might want a bath .
Take out anything else in the bottom of the cage , they like to splash .
A spare cage to use for baths is nice to have if your birds will let you handle them .

It seems to me that they are just having fun. maybe they want to have a bath. If that is the case you might want to put a bigger dish and ut some ta water in it. It can;t be to warm because they w't get in

Sounds like they are having fun to me. Personally, I found a water bottle that can be attached to the outside of the cage and rotated their toys. Works like a charm . have a tweet year.

They could be tipping the water over because the water is contaminated.

I would say get a bigger, flatter dish, better for balance if they are perching on it and also better if they do want to have a bath in it.
