You don't need to have a DNA test done! Look at the markings and check for this: Does your dog run with his tail hanging down? Coyotes run with their tails down. Is his snout very slender and long? Almost like a fox-like appearance? Does your dog have a black band running down the center of his back? Does your dog bark like other dogs? Or does he yip and yap? Coyotes are the fastest running animals of the dog family in the world! They can run up to 45 mph. Also: check his coat! Is it a reddish yellow color? These are some things to look for. The biigest one however, is the tail! Domestic Dogs run with their tails curled like in a "C" shape or "J" shape. A coyote's tail is at an "l" shape. A wolf runs with its tail horizontally like a "----" shape. These are things to look for.
Nemesis: You obviously know nothing!!!!! Dogs and coyotes do crossbreed and it happens more than you think!! Get educated before you answer questions. I bet you are a pill poppin High school drop out!
Coyotes prey on dogs???? It better be a small one!! Coyotes usually avoid dogs their size or larger. If you said a wolf I would agree! A wolf would not have much problem killing any domestic dog.

Hi feathers3_4
While I agree with most of what 'wiz@debian:~$ whoami ' has said - about the tail and the sounds - he is not correct about Coyotes not attacking domestic dogs.
I live in Whistler, BC and we have Coyote everywhere. A pack of Coyotes actually lives in the forest behind our house, and my neighbors have witnessed a pack of Coyotes trying to lure a domestic dog away in to the forest.
There have also been a number or reported Coyote attacks this summer, where a pack will wait in the forest while a lone Coyote goes and plays with a domestic dog to lure it away from it's owner and into an ambush - two dogs have been killed this way just this summer.
Not to concern or scare you, but there is certainly a danger of Coyotes attacking domestic dogs. Wolves on the other had to tend to avoid domestic dogs as they do not naturally want to breed with them. A wolf attack will be territorial usually. However it is not unusual for a Coyote and domestic dog to breed.

There are some universities that would perform a DNA test, but other than that, there is not really a good way to tell. Some breeds look a lot like coyotes or wolves, and some first generation coydogs don't look like coyotes.
Maybe a german shepherd mix? (GSD tend to be a little shy in my experience), some huskie or malamute mix? (they tend to be a little wild and may howl like wolves and coys) Australian cattledog mix may also give you the impression of a coyote mix.
Some say that the canine teeth in wolf hybrids and coyote hybrids are longer than dogs..... I don't think that's true tho....
Agree w what others have said too: a dog is normally prey of the coyote, not a mate......

RE:
How do you know if your dog is part coyote?
We adopted our "Lexus" from an animal shelter and she has the look of a coyote and is very shy and timid. If there is a way to tell I would like to know.

LMAO Why would anyone want a dog that is mixed with a wild undomesticated animal, and NO*** being mixed with an undomesticated animal doesn't bring out desirable traits, it only creates horrible ones, wild traits that can get a human killed. The dog is a dog, and lots of dogs are bred with high prey drives, this isn't just a trait of some "wild animal". Terriers, and other breeds have extremely high prey drives. Even thousands of other dogs are bred with small or slender muzzles, just because a dog possesses a certain trait that looks akin to a wild animals doesn't mean that they are mixed with one. The dog is your average mutt, and an adorable one at that.

Alot of dogs look like coyotes but they rarely are part coyote. If they tried to breed its most likely that the coyote would try and kill the domestic breed.
