Make sure his cage is kept clean. The water must be changed daily and the empty seed shells taken out of the food containers.
Talk and whistle to the bird. They love the attention. I always take birds out of their cages and let them exercise their wings. I also like playing with them. We used to play as kids with our pet budgies all the time. We had their toys on a table and played with them there. My brother even played "hide and seek" with the bird. He would crawl under the table and call him. The bird would go looking for him. He would eventually drop himself to the floor and walk over to him totally thrilled!!
Birds are like little kids!!

Most of the time, it's pretty simple. Change their water and food and make sure the area around the cage is cleaned. Some people change the cage paper every day, though some, like me, do it every three days or so.

You'll also want to talk a lot to the bird(s). The love the attention and as silly as it sounds, they enjoy explanations of where their owners have gone and why you're there instead. Some people will show on their fingers how many days their owner will be gone. The larger birds such as the amazons and greys love stuff like that.

Hi there. Companion birds are smarter than once thought. Talk to her like she is a baby or a small child. Whistle, jump around. You are her flock leader. Get silly and involved. Feed her a good pellet food, limit seeds to 10%, give her fresh fruits and veggies. Eat it in front of her and tell her how goood it is. She'll get excited and try. Rotate her toys. Give her a bath in warm water 2 inches deep, flick the water with your fingers, laugh, then she will want to play. She sits there copying you. Hang in there. Change your attitude and she will learn to be a happy bird from you. Have a tweet year.
