I bought a tooth scaler at a professional dog supply store and scale my dogs teeth whenever any tarter shows up. My vet said you can actually use a dime to scrap the tarter off if a tool scares your dog. My dog is 7 and still doesn't need her teeth cleaned by a vet.
Here is where you can order a tooth scaler, finger brushes, and tooth paste for your dog.

It depends on how much tarter is on their teeth. If it's only a little you can start brushing their teeth and help prevent more from building up. Brushing every day or every other day can help a lot. Make sure you use doggie toothpaste, because the fluoride in our toothpaste can be toxic if they swallow it. Also, there are bones and chew toys that are good for helping to keep tarter from building up.
If there is a lot of tarter already, and especially if there is already gum disease, you need to let the vet do the dental. That tarter is basically cemented onto the tooth, and they have to scrape it off while the dog's asleep. The reason this is important is that bacteria love to live in the tarter, and they can get into the blood stream and cause infection in the kidney and heart. Plus, having dental disease hurts. Imagine if your gums were very red because of tarter and bacteria.
Make sure your vet does blood work before hand to make sure your dog can handle anesthesia. Also, your dog may need to be on antibiotics beforehand if there's a lot of tarter. This can kill off some of the bacteria on the tarter so there is less risk of it getting into the blood stream during the dental.
Here's to happy teeth!

Hello there!
Since your dog already has tarter on his teeth, brushing his teeth right now won't do much. To get rid of the tarter, call your local veterinarian and have them do a dental cleaning for your doggy.
Once the veterinary technicians at your local vet's office/clinic have cleaned the dog's teeth, you can then take measures in your dogs dental upkeep.
The amount of tarter build-up is also dependent on the dog. Some dogs need to have their teeth cleaned once a year, some never really need it.
As for doggie teeth care:
You can buy doggy toothbrushes and doggy toothpaste at your local petstore! Just ask one of the attendants to help you find it next time you're in.
Caring/brushing your dogs teeth will help in his dental care; but he will probably need more dental cleanings in the future.
Signs to watch out for (dental):
- Really foul dog breath
- White gums (this would be an emergency asap indicator)
- Chipped/broken teeth
I posted some links below on 'how to' brush your dog's teeth, and a link to doggy toothpaste/toothbrush.
~Hope this helps. :)

They do sell doggie toothpaste and toothbrushes, but this can be a real hassle. We give my dog a DentaBone about once or twice a month, and she loves them! She sits with it and will take a good hour to chew on it until it's gone. They are specially formulated to clean your dog's teeth and get rid of plaque and tartar. We've been doing this since she was a puppy, and she's almost 8 years old now; every time we take her to the vet, the doctor compliments her teeth and says how great and healthy they look. We've never brushed her teeth. The DentaBones come in many different sizes, and they'll definitely help your dog's teeth.

Yes they sell dog toothpaste at your local pet stores. They also sell dog toothbrushes! LOL. Yes, you can take them to the vet where they will make them sleep and do a detail clean, which is the best way, but a cheaper way is to brush the teeth yourself. There are also bones that have 'tarter control.' You could try that! Good luck!

I had my dogs teeth cleaned by our vet, It was about $150.00. I feel it was worth it, because tarter and gum disease have been linked to heart disease not only in dogs but in humans too. Her breath was great after that and her teeth were so white and pretty, people actually noticed! They put a sealant on her teeth while she was still under to protect her for 2 years. I don't brush her teeth, just give her quality food and dental bones to chew. That averages $75.00 a year for nice breath and a healthy dog. She was back to normal just 2 days after surgery. The vet said it would lenghten her life. I don't think thats a bad thing.

Yes, you can buy doggy toothpaste and brushes and they work wonderfully on stain and to help keep build up away but, you need a vet to do dentistry to get the teeth white for you before you end up with a serious build up. They anesthetize the dog to keep it calm during the procedure, otherwise they wouldn't be able to get near the dog's mouth.

yes they do sell toothpaste. check your local pet store for toothpaste and a tooth brush. Call around to your local vets to see if they have to put your pet under, most of them do, but some might not. It just depends on the vet.
