My son is a Corporal and he has been in the Marines for 3 1/2 years. A Corporal is an E4, and a Staff Sergeant in the Army is an E5 on the pay scale.

I do know that the Marines have meritorious promotions too---some guys graduate from boot camp as a Private First Class instead of a Private. Sometimes there are meritorious promotions for other reasons as well. But in general, you do have to work hard and earn your promotion, so it's really up to you as to how far and how fast you can get promoted and advance in rank in the Marine Corps.

All depends on how hard you work at it. My 3 years comes up in June; according to some higher-ups, I'll most likely be meritoriously promoted sometime in September or October if I can get a few things straighten out. My friends from boot camp has picked up Corporals since last year (they're active). I'm a Reservist so it takes longer to pick up rank. We did have a SSgt who was meritoriously promoted to every rank in 6 years.

Uhh, Marine Mom... SSgt in the Army is E-6!!! Sorry ma'am. E-5 SSgt is in the USAF!!!

Not likely. If you are **** hot and get a meritorious promotion to corporal and sergeant, you might make staff sergeant in about 8 years, if you are in aviation, which tends to promote a little bit faster due to high turnover. I made Sergeant in four years and nine months, 45 days before I went on terminal leave, and I got an NJP that basically made me non-promotable for about 18 months until I could get my PRO/CON marks back up.

Marine aviation promotes to sergeant in about five years, but it was not unheard of for a corporal in the infantry to have two service stripes (eight years) before being promoted to sergeant, as there is a high number of infantry, and only a few slots available. In a technical MOS like mine was, there were only 65 or listed as electronic countermeasures technician (once you promote to first sergeant or master sergeant, you get a new MOS designator), and we turned over about 25% per year.

Ranks just aren't given They are EARNED (especially in the Marine Corps). So a lot of it depends on how hard you work at it.
