My sister and her husband are having their 40th wedding anniversary next month. Their daughters are having a catered dinner for them. They requested no gifts. However, we would like to do something more than just show up and bring a card. We would like to bring some kind of remembrance that they could cherish or put in their memory book. Does anyone have any ideas. While we could spend a lot of money, we don't think that would be appropriate. Something unique and inexpensive seems to be more appropriate. Any suggestions?

Go to your library through the archives and buy them the paper that was printed on their original wedding day by the New York Times or Washington Post That will bring back memories I also think thereare places online that you can buy archived Newspapers.InExpensive Incredibly thoughtful.OR
Do some digging find out what was their personal "wedding song"then halfway through say I think we should dance and have them slowdance to it again infront of everyone.

I would talk to their kids about where their old pets are burried in the backyard... once you find a fairly recent one take it too a good taxidermist. Be sure to get the eyes right, that is where the soul of the animal is.

Anywho, if they loved the animal and have a good sense of humor then they should be pleasantly suprised... do not take it to the party, because other people might really be turned off by this and start calling you an alchemist or some kind of sorcerer. I would have the kids put it in their house on the dinner table. Don't forget to put a card on it... I am sure the next day you will get some kind of phone call.

However, if they log into Y! Answers and find out it was not an original idea it might taint the whole thing. Good Luck.

I would get together with other family members and collect all their pictures from over the years and make a video. I did this for my grandparents 50th anniversary and it turned out wonderful. I Incorporated old music from their era and used pictures from the last fifty years. Include children and grandchildren, dig up their old wedding pictures. This is so easy, you can purchase a program at best buy to make it look really professional. This is a gift that really makes an impression and is totally unique.

Pick a favorite memory of yours regarding them and get a little "souvenir" type gift that pertains to it, as a remembrance of that special time. I would definitely remind my sister of this particular incidence ahead of time (so much so that she will probably dismiss your talking about it) to be sure there aren't any bad memories tied to it. Like, if the car broke down as they were leaving the church and there was a special something memorable about that... get a toy car or "whatever" and put it on a key chain.

Also, don't forget to fix up their car (carefully and tastefully, you know) with a sign that says "Still happily married" or something similar.

I think it would be really nice if you could get ahold of one of their wedding pictures and have it refurbished. Get a frame that will match the decor of their home so they can put it up for everyone to see.

Maybe you could buy a pair of wineglasses (or waterglasses or whatever) and have them engraved with the original date & the anniversary.
Do you have any original keepsakes---like matches, napkins, or anything?
If so, have them sealed in plexiglass, and engrave that.

Wow, forty years.........write a poem for them....that is a LONG time!

Maybe a generous donation to their favorite charity. A scrapbook or old picture of the family.
