There is no such thing as a chemical imbalance.

We just give these drugs to our kids just because we don't want to deal with them!
Schools say that kids have ADD or ADHD. These are fake diseases. Just labels to give drugs to kids so we don't have to deal with them!
For thousands of years teachers have dealed with trouble kids. Why do we have to drug them now.

I believe you and I agree. Some of the medications are okay, but I don't like the ones NOT approved specifically for young children. My son has tourettes syndrome plus which have very similar behaviors as bipolar (tourettes is more than tics). He was on this same medication at age 4, never at the doses mentioned in the article though. At age 8, during a routine test for him which include a ekg, they found a right bundle branch block of the heart. He was taken off the medication immediately. After 2 months of heart monitoring, they had said he could go back on it. I gave it to him once, 1/2 tablet of .1mg, he turned white as could be while he slept and had shallow breathing. I never gave it to him again!

So anyone who thinks that the article on the little girl you linked are crap, is wrong. My son and myself were fortunate and blessed by God who I believe intervened. Doctors should be more careful with prescribing and parents should be far more cautious!

I can't believe that this women gave her daughter, a 4 year old, that much of this medication. My son is very big for his age and just a 1/2 tablet at the age of 8 knocked him out. This child had to be vegetable like.

I learned a lesson in monitoring more closely, I hope others will as well.

Bravo to you for making this information known, I hope others will read it and really think and consider the dangers.

Having said that, there are really mental illnesses and chemical imbalances. Some need closely monitored medications and some can be maintained by diet. Professionals, doctors, and parents need to stick to the least invasive and least medicated way to do this. For those parents with children who are disabled, admit it, do not sit in denial, and seek help along with doctor help. My son goes to a theraputic day school that specialize in dealing with children with these types of problems. It is at no cost to me, as the school district pays for it. I think that school districts paying for these kind of things are far more important than housing their offices with fancy furniture. That is just one of the misuse of school funds I have personally witnessed by a public school district. I worked at one for 6 years, they really do waste money on things that do not involve the children.

Even during long stretches of peace, they teach thier kids to BLAME America for everything and hate us. Even though we FEED Ethiopians and other Africans, and NOT bomb them, still if there is starvation, it is the U.S. FAULT !!!!!! All around the world every nation feels that way, yess even Europeans, Brits spit on us and call us baby killers-yes our allies! I've lived around the world as a soldier so i know. We can't win, yet we have done many humanitarian operations that you have never heard of in places you've never heard of. It only changes their opinion of us for a day until the next food crisis. The WORLD is jealous of the USA. and I am Black BTW. And also BTW: don't even think YOU as a black person, I am assuming could do a humanitarian relief in Africa, they will kill you first, they hat Black Americans-ironically they WILL tolerate White American humanitarians-yes one ones that enslaved their ancestors and still occupy their land. You may last longer in the middle east as a humanitarian but eventual they get kidnapped and beheaded if your family don't have money. So, by all means take your black ars over there and see what happens to it.

As a teacher and parent I can say that I have noticed that many parents nowadays are not really "parenting" their children. They want to be their childrens' friend.

When a child is acting out in class, 9 out of 10 times you can trace it back to some sort of inbalance in the home life. But today instead of disciplining children or spending quality time with them, people are looking for a quick and easy fix (aka: drugs).

I believe in positive reinforcers, but I also certainly believe in disciplining my child. If my son does not meet his responsibilities, if he does not do his homework and his grades drop, there are painful consequences. He loves to watch TV and play video games and was once restricted for an entire week from enjoying them because he lied to me and did not do his homework. It was probably harder on me than it was on him because he was a little bored and started pestering me, but I held strong. Giving in means you can be manipulated.

One time when he didn't like what I told him to do, he slammed his bedroom door and yelled "You are not my friend anymore!". I opened his door and calmly told him, #1 this is my house and you had better not slam MY doors and #2 I am not your friend, I am your mother, and I will do right by you whether or not you like it.

I also make time to talk with him every night. I ask about his day. I listen without interrupting and I hug and kiss him and tell him how much I love him. Sometimes I am exhausted and feel that I need to take care of myself, but what I model and teach him now will determine the kind of man he grows up to be.

Strict at times? Yes. But parenting is a JOB, and if you aren't up to doing it, then don't apply.

Finally, there ~is~ a place for psychological medications but in my opinion, they are definately overprescribed.

A drug overdose indicates inadequate parental supervision. As other interventions become more successful, saving premature children from dying, recognizing and treating Alcohol Fetal Syndrome etc., there are more at risk children.

There are over six billion human beings on Earth now. We are recognizing tragedies as they are broadcast.

Over one million humans die from malaria every year. It is not in your face because it is not broadcast as much. Do you have a double standard? Is life more precious in the United States than elsewhere?

Hey, I agree, medication is way overused and so is the lable ADD and ADHD. but I am also a special ed teacher, and trust me there is such a thing. They have even found differences in the brains of children diagnosed with this.

My kid's doing far, far better on Concerta than he ever did before. I can't begin to say how far he's come - fine, he's still ADHD, but he's gone from a Class 4 inability to read to a Class 7 - reading at at high-6 level. We saw the signs in Class 1, but partly due to people like you, we tried and tried and tried - widely varying methods - but all failed until Ritalin.

Please do NOT go overboard with you rant - you sound like a paranoid Luddite and if your kind ever gets its way, millions of kids will lapse into a world they truly can't handle.

I believe it is because most parents do not want to take responsibility for their children, If a child starts to act different they rush him/her to the Dr. they put them on Ritalin or some other drug rather than looking at diet, and how or what they are feeding their children today, sadly our children are controlled by drugs today because most parents do not want to deal with them.

I agree, parents or some adult need to take time and responsibility for our kids, giving them drugs teaches them nothing and kills them tells them you have to take a pill to get thru life very sad

I totally agree with you. there are too many children out there taking drugs that are prescribed for them, when they really don't need to. I think all we can do is pray for them. and hopefully that no more dies because of it.

I agree with you totally...

I think that kids will continue to die and be neglected until people stop having ADD or ADHD...and focus on one thing...and that is this next generation of precious children...

No one wants to be accountable anymore ... everyone wants to make excuses when the equation is simple...put in the time required when you bring children into the world...

And it is also important that we realize that it takes a village to raise a child...and not to dose a child....

Great question!!!!
