Mormons seem like decent people to me. Yes I know there is the whole multiple-wives thing and all, but Catholics and Baptists aren't exactly weirdness-free either.

You'd think other Christians would embrace them as brothers, not demonize them as heretics or weirdos.

But I never did understand Christians that well.

For the record, I'm an atheist.

I fail to see how non-traditional christianity = cult. I think that's just bias.

because, in their minds, their cult looks better when they make fun of any other cults.

they can't look better solely on their own merits, they have to look better by slamming others.

it depends on what you mean by bashing. Demonizing people is never acceptable for Christians to do, but denouncing them as heretics is, unfortunately, sometimes necessary. As many posters will point out, many Mormons are fine people who act in a very Christian way.

Of course "But mom, he started it first" Mormons consider orthodox Christianity - that is, all the Christianity that existed in 1830 - as being an abomination. According to them the Catholic church is the mother harlot of all the denominations. Their temple rites used to have Satan paying off the 'ministers of Christianity'. So it's not difficult to understand from a human perspective why Christians would be wary of Mormons. But as Christians they are called to love even their enemies, and to give a good defense for their faith in and out of season. Christians do not (at least most don't) think that Mormonism is Christian, even if there is much to admire in their lives.

most Christians think of Mormonism as a cult. They desire to become gods. They use The Book of Mormon in addition to the Bible. They wear 'holy' underwear. Only the high ranked Mormons know all the truth behind their belief. Other Mormon believers are innocently trapped into this cult. It really is a strange group. Their main temple has an angel on top, not a cross. It is decorated with hexagons. Look up more on the net.

OH COME ON, everybody bashes Mormons! Not just Christians. Just Kidding. No the real reason is they are close to being a cult. They do not adhear to the traditional theological ideas of Christianity (which in some cases shouldn't be all that bad), but they are very conservative and are very exclusive.

I am a member of "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. This church is also known as the LDS church or Mormon church. I wrote the whole title because some people may believe it's the church of Joseph Smith.

We believe in Christ and The Atonement. Without his gift, there would not be any resurection or forgiveness of sins. Yes, we believe in works. But, without The Atonement, we could do nothing to save us. The reason we believe in "works" is our belief of repentance. You are to repent and turn away from sin. In other words, action not just words.

I have briefly answered some of the misconceptions associated with the church. Hopefully, I can answer your question well, but briefly.

Christ ordained the Apostles. They went and preached the Gospel. They also ordained Elders, Deacons, and other church leaders. The authority of Christ was passed on thru ordained leaders. I understand the Catholic church believes Peter was the first Pope. Peter was ordained by Christ. Peter passed this to the other Popes. (Remember, this is a very brief explanation.)

What I am attempting to point out is the other churches do not have this linage. Some are spin-offs from the Catholic church. A lot of religions were spawned here in America during the "Enlightment" eras. (I believe there was two different times.)

Joseph Smith prayed for an answer about which church to join. He was commanded to join none of them. (Remember brief answer here.) After translating the ancient records, he was visit by Peter, who restore the authority of Christ.

In other words, there are only two Christian churches who can profess to have the authority given them from Christ. The Catholic church and the Mormons.

We do not preach that other churches are wrong. We teach they do not have "the fulness of the Gospel." All mankind may return to our Heavenly Father thru repentance and the Atonement.

I hope this enlightnes you.

It's a lack of education on the non-Mormon Christians. Most Christians do not believe that there can be additional scriptures from which the world can learn, including modern day revelations.

Most Christian denominations dwell on the past; the Mormons draw on the past to look toward the future.

Despite the things most people don't get about the Mormons, they are exemplary people and are of a higher moral caliber than most people.

I think they are just a much more strict religion. Many people (of other religions) see their ways as too uptight or demanding. Also, ths fact that they do go door to door makes many people uneasy. They feel that they are pushing their religion upon them (I've had it happen many times). They did seem like very nice people though, and I think they do mean well. They are just doing what they have been taught they are supposed to do..spread the word of God and save people. That's not so bad.

Jesus told a parable about the wheat and the tares, i.e., some people that call themselves Christian really aren't, because they really aren't kind. Jesus didn't bash the Samaritan woman's religion, but he bashed the Pharisees who thought they were better than other people. I doubt that he would bash the Mormons, either, whether they're wrong or not.

We (Christians) shouldn't be bashing Mormon people. We are clearly concerned about cultism (is that a word?), and the Mormon religion is a cult.
Christians are supposed to treat people with "the love of the Lord". Well we fall short......... wayyyyyyyyyy... to often! Sometimes Christians are some of the meanest people I know. I'm just so grate full that G-d's grace is so huge. We all need it! Boy do we need it!

p.s. Smile :) Jesus loves you

Christians oppose the Mormon faith because of what it stands for. The Mormons have another book, The Book of Mormon, which they say is another testament of the Bible. Adding to the Bible after the canon was solidified is heresy. Also, the Book of Mormon purports that Christ was not God of the Trinity and that all men can achieve Christ's status. That is how I understand it. They also get baptized for their dead, which is why they keep extensive genealogies.
