In an open or partially healed wound, bandages help keep the area more sanitary by keeping out dirt and bacteria. If it is a sprain or a fracture it helps keep the injured area more stable by giving extra support. In a break or a fracture hard bandages keep the area completely imobilized so that the break can heal.

Bandages should be used for hideous wounds that could harm other people who happen to view them. If it's not that bad, just use a medical ointment, usually heals faster when it's not confined in bandages anyway.
