Oddly enough, the people who have the most trouble with homosexuality are those who follow a religion whose roots lie in the Bronze Age.

Most of us more modern religious folk have very little problem with it. In Neo-Paganism as a whole, homosexuality is accepted as a natural orientation just as heterosexuality is.

Why is it that whenever you point out bad behavior to a person under thirty or so, they come back and tell you what year it is, as if that has anything to do with it?
What is moral and responsible sexual behavior today will still be moral and responsible sexual behavior a thousand years from now, if the human race lasts that long.....
As far as religion is concerned, God does not change. If He said that homosexuality was an abomination several thousand years ago, what makes you think He is going to change His mind just because it is a different time?
Sex is about love, and marriage, and children, and family. It is to bless the union of a man and a woman. That is what it was intended for when God first created gender...so why the big surprise that those who believe in Him honor sex as His gift to a man and a woman in a committed marriage relationship?
Or did you think that homosexuallity was a brand new idea with this millenium? No, my dear, it has been around all this time. It was an abomination back in Biblical times, it is an abomination now, and it will be an abomination as long as the human race exists.

Since God, speaking through the inspired prophets authoring the books of the bible, declared homosexuality a sin, then it is a sin.
See: Leviticus 18:22; Leviticus 20:13; Romans 1:26-27; 1 Corinthians 6:9,10; 1 Timothy 1:10.

Thus, homosexuality is just one of a litany of the degradations of the perfect moral state found in original creation.

As all sinners, homosexuals can be true Christians. On the scale of the depravity of sin, homosexuality is no greater than other sins. It is just that homosexuality is often practiced openly ("in your face"), so the reaction by some is over the top. It may also be the case that anyone that seems to revel in their sin seems disingenuous if they are a self-professed Christian. I believe that the true Christian homosexual struggles daily with their sinful nature. And when we all do some personal inventories of our own sinful natures, I am sure we are found wanting.

Most people are disgusted by the thought of sex and affection with their same sex. That disgust frequently is expressed at disgust for the people who DO seek sex and affection from the same sex and true to human nature people seek justification for their loathing in books of authority such as the Bible. In other words first comes the hate, then comes the justification for the hate. Once justified the hate can be expressed in slurs or worse without guilt.

It has much more acceptable now, and the issue is trapped in the conflict between tradition and change. Its not easy to change a whole cultures tradition- just look at racism. Also, unlike racism, homosexuality could be a problem for the human race- what if everyone was gay? We wouldn't reproduce and that would be the end of people.

Homophobia is deep rooted in the culture of the Near East. As such its rooted in the religions that sprang from that region (Judaism, Christianity, Islam).

Religion is doing more than its part in keeping that male insecurity alive.

It is not accepted, because it goes against what these religions have stood for since the beginning. It is what they have been built upon, and they are not going to change now. Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs, but you can't change the foundations of a religion.

Actually, it was more acceptable then than now. Back then homosexuals had their own places to live, their own meeting places etc. within the same city as the heterosexuals. They just didn't do business together is all.

Indeed--If Christians actually obeyed Christ's commandments to to stop judging or condemning others--it wouldn't be a problem---but Christians like to cite other homophobic authors in the Bible to mask their hate in the name of God.

The modern arguments in favor of homosexuality have been insufficient to overcome the evidence that homosexual behavior is against divine and natural law, as the Bible and the Church, as well as the wider circle of Jewish and Christian (not to mention Muslim) writers, have always held.

The Catholic Church thus teaches: "Basing itself on sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered. They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved" (Catechism of the Catholic Church 2357).

However, the Church also acknowledges that "[homosexuality’s] psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. . . . The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God’s will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord’s cross the difficulties that they may encounter from their condition.

"Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection" (CCC 2357– 2359).

Paul comfortingly reminds us, "No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your strength, but with the temptation will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it" (1 Cor. 10:13).

Homosexuals who want to live chastely can contact Courage, a national, Church-approved support group for help in deliverance from the homosexual lifestyle.
