They are nocturnal by nature and are probably bored because you aren't. Invite kitty to bed with you and you'll be surprised how quick she settles down with some strokes. Cindy 1 did that. Eventually she just followed me to bed. I was even allowed to massage her paws, even between the toes! Quiet kitty after that.

My cat often starts howling in the middle of the night. It's a heartwrenching howl/meow. She also runs through the house like a little crazed monster in the night.

I think cats do this because they can't sleep the same length of time that people do, i.e. cats can't stay asleep for 8 or 10 hours straight.
They wake up and then no one is around and then they feel lonely and abandoned.

What I've tried with my cat is to give her some wet food before going to sleep. This works at times (but not always). Often she is then almost comatose from all that tasty food. She just goes to sleep and stays that way for a long time and doesn't have the energy to howl and run around and cause mischief.

He maybe lonely. If he is the only cat you have he maybe wanting someone to be with. Cats are night animals. Maybe a cat friend might do the trick. I do kitten adoptions and I always recommend that if a person has no other that 2 are better because they keep each other company.

I think that they're just lonely, they know you're there but they want you up with them, even if they're sleeping. Like my cat Darla, she'd lay next to me on the coutch at night, and I'd get up to go to bed, and she'd stay on the sofa and sleep, but when she woke up she'd come meowing and looking for me, and eventually she'd come up in the bed with me and sleep, but for some odd reason she'd wake up in the middle of the night and do who knows what, and then an hour later, forget where I was and meow like crazy. And another cat I had would cry early in the morning until everyone in the house was awake and then once they were, he'd get up in my bed and sleep lol, I dont really undertstand it, but I guess they just like us being up and around.

My cat usually cries when he is bored, which is especially at night!! I just give him a little bit of attention and he settles right back down.

He will also cry out to let me know he has left me a little present (usually a worm or stick!!!), it's kinda a "hello, it's me, got ya little pressie, come and get it!!!"

In the wild, cats would be out hunting at night when it's safer for them and the rodents are out. You can train the by wearing them out playing before bed and then crating them with food litter and water in a dark warm room.

If they're not neutered, then this will add to the problem and they will yowl all night.

Cats are nocturnal. My cat if very social and when he is left alone he will meow outside of the bedroom door. I think it is because he wants to get in and have our full attention, especially when the dog is kenneled up for the nigh.t

Cats are nocternal. That means they are more active at night and sleep all day.
When they cry at night they are asking "Where's the party?" and "Where the heck is everyone?"
