you definently need to have patience. in this occupation you deal with nervous patients constantly...most people dont like to go to the dentist! compassion is very important as well...you have to keep them calm and let them know that it's probably not going to be as bad as they think it is and that you will take good care of them! not having a weak stomach is a plus too...you will see alot of blood and other nasty things! it's very helpful if you have a good memory because there's alot of different procedures that you will have to learn step by step. once you do though, it'll be second nature and you'll love your job! i love being a dental assistant! hope this helped...if you have any more questions or you want me to go into more detail about anything feel free to email me! j_elaine1982@yahoo.com :)

A dental assistant should be a people person. Very sociable. If you don't have these qualities, you will be miserable in your job. Dealing with patients that have tooth aches, etc can be very stressful especially if you are not a people person. A dental assistant should also be able to deal with children, to be able to talk to them and help them thru a procedure.

Enjoy people, have a great "bed side manner", not be bothered by the sight of people's mouth or the smell.

"Guts"
