When Did Siam Become Thailand

Thailand had been a nation way before 1939 for sure. What they did that year was to formally announce their official name, from Siam which was given by foreign nations as far back as 1890s. And even then, the country was in existence as evidenced by the number of rulers and the acceptance of Buddhism, way before Christianity. I guess tracing back Thai history will surely go back quite a while.

i disagree with you wikipedia buffs. if youre going to ignore the existance of Siam and act as if Thailand first became a nation in 1939 (which is ludicrious, all Siam did was change its name) ........ then you must recognize that Thailand became a nation in 1949, not 1939. if you think a name change accounts for a birth of a nation ...... then in 1945 Thailand ended its existance as a nation when they changed the name back to Siam. in 1949, the name Thailand was brought back and has been named Thailand ever since.

in reality, the groundwork for the nation that is now referred to as Thailand dates back to approximately 3500 BC ...... depending on which source you use. my wife is Thai and i have been to Thailand too many times to count ...... but i can assure you ..... there isnt a single Thai that feels as if their country was founded in 1939 or 1949. as a previous poster referred to .... Thailand DOMINATED SE Asia for centuries before it became known that the Earth was round.

Thailand was at one time the dominant nation in the region and is several hundred years old. It is still one of the two or three most important. Wikipedia says 1238AD was the date of formation. In the 19th century the Thais decided they had to modernise and they have been doing so ever since with varying success. As a result the country is relatively prosperous and is not exactly a third-world state.

the Majority of Muslims are in the 3 southern provinces. The rest of Thailand is still with a small Muslim minority and is the normal happy land that everybody knows. The people are happy, smiling and accepting of other peoples diversities. Please do not try to give Thailand a bad name for a small area and you scare mongering

if you mean thailand as a nation name, then i would say the same as people above me, june 24, 1939

before that her name was SIAM. (created around 13th century.) with its own speaking and writing language.

this country had been destroyed 2 times during its long history, and every comeback they made, they always came back with as a stronger siam.
