We have about 1/3 acre and that's plenty for our lab. You don't really need more than that, but be sure its arranges so the dogs can run. Ours is a corner lot, so its long and skinny and perfect for her and her friends to play in. Whatever size it it, make sure its fenced in.

You don't need a very big backyard. You need to exercise them by walking. Take them for 2 walks per day, 40-60 minutes each time to make the Labrador happy. I'm sure the JRT will be able to catch up.

Like Elena mentioned...exercise! Dogs do not need huge backyards, expensive doggy purses (Paris Hilton ring a bell?), toys, or outfits; they don't care for these things. They need food, water, clean/dry shelter, and most importantly good pack structure and exercise. A backyard, regardless of size, is just a big kennel to a dog. Allowing two dogs to run loose in a huge backyard will not satisfy their needs. Walking with their pack (you, or family members) is a must, because it is a something that their instincts beg for. Their instincts also tells them to go out and explore, this is accomplished through walks. If you do not walk your dogs daily, they will stress out, be unhappy, and will very soon develop behavioral issues, guaranteed. Any of us would go crazy if we did not fufill our needs/wants. Constant yawning is a dead giveaway to a stressed dog. Dogs do not yawn because they're tired, they yawn because they're stressed out.

Well, if your dogs will like to play (you can assume), then a big backyard is good for your house, but if they will play on the inside, or are not sociable to eachother, you may consider just a small backyard.

50x75 would be okay, 100 x 100 would be great, more would be even better. I have 2 60# dogs in a 100X200. It needs to be big enough that they can get around where they poo. if its too small-then they will have to walk in it-they will not like it.

well first off know, that JRT's need more than just a back yard for exercise..then need walks and discipline..a run around the back yard, exercise that it is, will not do the trick..the size of the back yard really has nothing to do with it..please research the animal you choose to adopt/buy before you get it
