Is the "Post operative room", the same as "Intensive Care Unit" (ICU)?

In Indian hospitals there is an ICU.

Is if the same thing that in the west they call "Post op room", or are they different things.

In America, the Post operative room is called, "The recovery room." This is where the patient is placed right after surgery, where they are monitored closely while waking up from anesthesia. What we call the ICU is where patients are taken that need to be monitored closely on a longer term basis and they are given a hospital room to stay in during this time. The recovery room is usually a room where several patients would be only for a few hours then they are either taken to a regular hospital room or they are discharged if having same day surgery. But when they are in the ICU, they are taken to their own hospital room with a television, bathroom, closet etc...... The nurses monitor them closer with equipment. A person who has had a triple bypass operation, for example, would go to the ICU because it's dealing with the heart and they need to be closely watched for complications. The Post-Op room is usually where a patient goes immediately after surgery. They typically are there for an hour or so while the anesthesia wears off and then they are transferred to a regular hospital room.

The ICU is where patients in critical or serious condition go for much longer periods of time, until they have stabilized and their conditions have improved. So, these are two very different things. Post-Op room is short-term; ICU may be longer term.

They are two different things. Post op is used by patients to begin waking up from anesthesia and to check them out after surgery. Intensive Care Unit, ICU, is for people who's lives are in great danger and who require constant monitoring as a result.

The post-operative room is a room you are put in after the operation until you recover from the anesthesia and can be dismissed as ok to go home. Its usual time there is two or three hours. If your staying in the hospital youll be put in your admitting room. So my answer is "NO" it is not ICU. Bettyk

No. Post-op is also called "recovery." You would go there immediately after surgery to make sure there are no immediate complications (like removing your breathing tube too soon, side effects of anesthesia). Once they are sure you are stable, then you might go to ICU or CCU (if t was cardiac surgery).
