I strongly recommend brands NOT made by Menu Foods at all. As you know, Menu Foods is the BIG COMPANY that processed all the contaminated foods for various private petfood brands and national petfood brands. Those Cat food brands NOT made by Menufoods are:
(1) Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul
(2) Canidae/Felidae
(3) Breeder's Choice/Pinnacle (except for Chicken and Oats formula which is made by Menu)
(4) Natural Balance (the wet food brand I now feed my cats)
(5) Solid Gold
(6) Triumph/Evolve
(7) Merrick
(8) Kal Kan (Pedigree, Cesar, and Whiskas)
(9) Purina (Friskies, Fancy Feast, Purina One)
Some brands that are produced in whole or in part by Menu Foods but for which we are assured that:
(a) Their products are not produced in the suspected plants.
(b) None of their products are being recalled
(c) They have had no reports of sick, dying, or dead pets.
(d) Their products do not contain wheat gluten.
Such brands include:
(1) Nature's Variety
(2) Wellness
(3) Castor & Pollux (I bought their dry ultramix dry food)
(4) Newman’s Own Organics
(5) Wysong
(6) Innova

Officials are backtracking on the rat poison analysis but there is still a serious problem there. Feed your cat people food like lunch meat - especially bologna and ham . Also canned salmon and tuna will work. And don't forget fish (no bones). Be creative and see what your cat likes. Lots of folks are making their own pet food these days. This problem will be short lived and back to normal soon - substitue sources of pet foods will be available.

There are many cat foods still out there that are not affected by this recall. It doesn't appear that any of this poison got into the dry food supply, so for now that seems to be the best thing to feed our cats. If you don't feel safe feeding your cat commercial cat food, there are recipies for making cat food. But you have to be very careful that you include all the suppliments that a cat needs to be healthy. One important one is taurine - if cats don't get it in their diet they can die of heart disease. That's why cats can't eat dog food, it doesn't have enough taurine in it. If you really want to make your own food, ask your vet for some home diet recipies. You'll probably have to go to a health food store to get some of the ingredients.

You have probably heard this by now, but it was not rat poison after all. It is melamine, a component in making plastic. It is used as a pesticide in China. Cat food is what is best for your cat, since it is nutritionally balanced for them. I have been feeding my cats Innova EVO. It is natural, and has very little filler. They eat less of it to be full, and their poops are littler and have no odor! (They are like Tootsie Rolls!) As far as canned food, Innova makes some that the cats like, and Spot's Stew makes some that looks so good I could nuke it up and eat it!! Don't let the name fool you, they have it for cats, too! Good luck, and keep taking great care of your kitty!

That was in Wet Food only. You can go to the Menu Foods web site (link in source list below) to see a list of the recalled brands so you know which ones not to get, just buy something that is NOT on the recall list. My cats love Wiskas and Meow Mix Market Select. Any dry food you buy should be safe.

From what I understand, the scare was in certain foods, canned or foil packets. I was also frightened, I feed my cats and Dogs Eukenuba, they both get dry and do very, very well on it. Some Eukenuba canned and foil pack moist foods were on the recall list and I have thrown away any canned cat food I had due to that. (we had a cat that had some dental work and had to be on canned for a brief time). Dry food is great for all though.

I would check with your vet. Rats are omnivores so they can eat both meat and veggies so it should be ok. But i have never checked because im against canned cat and dog food altogether. They use too many preservatives unnatural ones and salts (a big no no!) and colours too! Animals fed on a canned food and kibble diet produce a lot more waste than an animal or fresh mince.

the problem stemmed from the gluten in the canned and pocket moist foods. Rat poisen got in the gluten (which holds the food in shape) and it was distritubuted in the food.
Menu Foods, the cat company that distributes these toxic foods to various stores were the only company that buys the gluten from this manufacturer.
go to Menufoods.com and they will give you all the brands that were infected.
also, remember that only the canned and pocket (moist) foods are bad, the dry foods are fine.
purina, 9-lives are okay if you are still alittle scared

Rat poison is a form of Warafarin, Rats injest it and literally bleed to death internally. It would take a lot of warafarin to sicken a cat or a dog and not that minute amount found in that sample of pet food reported. .
People take Warafarin, or rat poison, for their anti coagulation of blood due to heart disorders, so dont be so fearful.
Its another one of those " scare headlines" that have literally ZERO meaning.
The press gets their reader base up with "scare headlines" The reporters know nothing about rat poison and probably think its some kind of arsenic of lead.

the rat poison was only found in certain brands and only dry food. look up the article on yahoo! news. if you are still weary about the pet food, just feed them canned foods. someone else mentioned tuna....don't do that. cat food and dog food is made for their delicate digestive systems; they are not to eat 'people food'.
