What could cause this? He has only done this one time. Should I take him to the vet? For about 5 minutes or so he was crying and shaking and could not walk! Could this be a reaction to a toxic substance? If so, how would explain that within 5 minutes or so he is playing and jumping around like nothing ever happened? I was really worried at first!

We only feed him dry dog food. So no worries there. (that I know of)

sounds like a seizure. Most vets will not put a dog on anit-seizure meds for one or 2 seizures. Keep a journal of when they happen, how long they last and what happens. Also call your vet for they are aware that possible seizures are occuring

Like most people have said, this does sound like a seizure. I would call your vet and see what they recommend. I agree that you should keep a record of his seizures. Record what time of day they happened, what he was doing right before they happened, how long they last, what he did during the seizure, what he did after the seizure, and how long it takes him to get back to normal. Also, keep a video camera handy. It really helps the vet to figure out if it really is a seizure if they can see it on tape. Make sure there's nothing toxic he could have eating. Also check your electric cords and make sure he didn't chew on them.

this is a seizure, i had a dog that was hit by a car when he was a puppy and suffered from seizures. we used to wrap him in a blanket and hold him down since there was nothing else we could do it happened maybe 3 times a year. (he's a HUGE dog about 90lbs) He's still alive and happy. take him to the vet there maybe some medicine that can help him - we couldn't find any - or it could be some other underlying problem.

the answer of this question is another question ... how old is your dog ?

no one can tell why is that without knowing his age

okay the reason i asked for the dog age to know if it is something congenital or acquired ..

the signs is seizures .. but this is signs only .. but the thing here now what is the cause of this seizures?? is it something in the brain or the nervous system or he ate something toxic is it something that your dog will have all his life or just temporally.. that what you gonna know when you ask your vet you will never find the answer on yahoo answers

but i recommend to wait if this happen again if not it is up to you to go to a vet or not

I would suggest you take him to the vet. It sounds like epilepsy to me. Years ago we had a GSD who had epilepsy. He would start shaking, fall on his side, his legs would tense up and he would foam and slobber all over and sometime he would pee all over. When he came out it of it would sit there for a while and when he was able to walk again he would hop on our bed and sleep for a few hours. We had to give him 6 epilepsy pills a day for the rest of his life. It's not a pretty site. It got so bad even with the medication we had to put him to sleep. It was a hard thing to do, but better off for our dog. I could not stand to see him suffer any more.

Sounds like it could be a seizure. Take him to the vet and have him evaluated. Next time it happens, note exactly what happens, how long the episode is and how he acts afterward. But definately something that warrants a trip to the vet. Good Luck.

i am not sure if this is it, but defintailly check into it, i had a dog that did that, she collapsed and was shaking. It ended up be a condition were they have trouble swollowing there food and it comes right back up. You have to massage their throat everytime they eat. I am not sayin that your dog has that cause i am not their to see it, but you should really go see a vet, whatever it is it is good to catch it from the begginging.

This sounds as if it could be an epileptic seizure. Yes, you should take your dog to the vet. Some breeds are prone to epilepsy. The condition can range from very mild to severe. There are medications to help him.

It might be an epileptic seizure. I had a dog who had those. She would always be fine afterward. But they're scary. I'd call the vet to set up an appointment.
