This sounds like your typical neurotic miniature poodle, caused by it's breeder not socialising the pups. You could contact local vets to see if anyone runs a "puppy preschool" where you can start socialising and training the pup. Did you get to see the pups parents???, to check if they were normal, or neurotic messes? If you havent bonded with this pup, and dont have the time or inclination to persevere, then it might be better for the pups sake, as well as yours, to return it to it's breeder.

This dog is very insecure and should be returned to the breeder. He was probably not very well socialized during his first 8 weeks and was obviously held a lot. If the breeder won't take him back (or you don't want to give him back), you need to start socializing him right away. A lot of people with miniature/toy breeds make the mistake of holding and carrying their dogs everywhere. They think they are going to be hurt by someone or something if they are left on the ground because they are so little - this will not happen!

Do not pick up the puppy. Make the puppy deal with it's issues now, before it gets any older. If he shakes and cries, ignore the behavior. If he barks, ignore him. Only give him attention if he is quiet and calm. Don't worry that he doesn't want to play. This will develop after some of his other "issues" get resolved.

If there is a local AKC club in your area, I would highly recommend enrolling him in a puppy class. Stay away from the "PetsMart" classes, they will not be able to give you the help you need.

It will be hard for awhile, but it will be worth it. Good luck!

Poodles are highly intelligent and will learn to use the behaviors that bring them the attention that they want.
Put your puppy down and give him time to explore his new surroundings and become familiar with the sights and sounds of his new home. No matter how guilty YOU feel don't pick him up. If you leave the room and he barks, let him, unless you think that he wants to go out and do some business.
Now, go and call a local obedience school and register him for Puppy Kindergarten. Take advantage of having one of the smartest breeds on the list of intelligence and learn to train and socialize him so that your puppy will become a great companion. He's just he right age to get started.

um hopefully he hasnt have the typical pampered syndrome that little dogs have. were they just want attention and be a lap dog . but it seems that he has. what u can do is gradually leave him little by little alone. when he is asleep put him down but next to u and then he knoes u are there but u can do others stuff mean while he falls deeply asleep u can do that or give him something he likes a toy and put it away from u so hes not stuck to u 24/7 im sorry if im no help but good luck with ur situation

He is just a baby and adjusting to being away from his mama and a whole different place. Give him all the attention and love he needs. A new puppy is just like a new baby. Very dependant on you and very time consuming.

he got used to being held all the time so now that's what he expects. my pitbull puppy was the same way because the lady i got her from always held her and rocked her to sleep and stuff so u just have to break the habbit it takes awhile and its anoyin to hear them bark all the time but that's all it is. they feel safe in your arms just like a baby does but its better to break the habbit now than later

you need to the your puppy to the vet for a check up. Vaccinations can be started if well enough and a stool check can be done to check for intestinal parasites. Intestinal parasites, upper repiratory infections etc. can make a puppy VERY lethargic

Call your vet. He may have low blood sugar due to stress (hypoglycemia)...when I brought my Maltese puppy home he was very lethargic and he couldn't walk. I gave him a little Karo Syrup on his tongue (had to force it) and he was fine within 15 minutes.

I would call your vet to make sure.
