If I sell my car and the buyer brings me a "certified" or bank check, how can I verify if the check is legit?

if it's a certified check you can call the bank to confirm. but i would look the phone number for the bank up in the phone book or Internet so you know your calling a legitimate bank. if it's a teller check or certified the bank will be able to tell you if they will honor it. usually the money has already been put a side for the check. good luck

If it doesnt have the trademarks of a certified draft then put it in your account DO NOT TRANSFER TITLE until the check clears your account (5 business days). DO not under any circumstances transfer the title or create a bill of sale until the check clears your account. After you deposit it call the bank that it was drawn on (dont use any phone numbers that may be on the check) and use the internet to get the banks phone number and ask them to verify if the check was actually certified at the persons bank which should give you a pretty good idea. (You will need a photo copy of the check for this step). It may be a good idea to just get cash if we aren't dealing with amounts over $9999.99 (Anti-Money Laundering Paper Work)

Real easy, Lets go to the bank and cash this. Tell them something like your Uncle got ripped off this way and he is concerned for me. I'm not calling you a bad person, hell i like you your buying my car. but i have to be safe. Most of the time the check is good. Another thing to do is ask to see his licence, get the info off of it, say its just to cover me. Or just ask him to cash it and bring you the money, tell him you will have a receipt wating for him. What kind of car/what year and how much did you get for it> I have been a car salesman for 10 years, just would like to know, better yet dont tell me how much, ill guess, give me miles and condition does the a/c work does it run well e-mail me at coachgarybow@yahoo.com
