Okay, well either the man I dated who fought in the Gulf War (first) didn't (ha ha) know what he was talking about, or you all don't!!! I was told the flag is backward to how most people see it because soldiers wear it so their heart is looking out. In other words, to an outsider it's backward, but the heart sees it the right way.

The patches of the US flag are not facing the wrong way. The American soldier is considered to be a flag pole. The blue field of stars is always attached to the pole. Since US Soldiers are always moving forward, the flag is "flowing" behind the "pole."

To appear that it is waving in the wind in battle, like in the old day wars when an actual person carried the flag through a battle field. It used to be a few years ago that the only time you wore a flag on your uniform was when you were deployed, but since now everyone plays a part in the war on terror, even country side, everyone gets to wear it on regular duty uniforms.

They aren't. The 'Union' aka blue field with starts, is the 'front' of the flag. A properly displayed flag on the right sleeve appears to be 'backwards' because it is the opposite of what most people are used to seeing. Think of how a flag on the post attached to a vehicle appears. Compare that the the uniform of the driver. They match.

They aren't facing the wrong way they are facing as they would if you were carrying the flag into battle they did it this way for this reason as in the olden days when the flags was carried as opposed to now when we wear the symbol or flag on our uniforms

They aren't the flag is such to appear as if held on a flag pole and running into battle the stars would precede the stripes.

Check it out...i'm in the army...not "know someone who has a brother that is"...or whatever. The flags on our uniforms are not "backwards". They are on our uniforms facing as if it was flying behind us as we run into battle. If it were facing "forward" it would be flying as if we were retreating!!! We aren't the French Army.

they have to be displayed so that they appear to be flying in the wind. To this end they have the stars on the wrong side so that they are facing the way the soldier is facing

OKay i asked my ex husband this also, he is a army soldier of like 8 years! The reason why is because, a soldiers duty is to be loyal and serve his country. right? It is like that because it is closest to the soldiers heart.

first i will second ja man -- he is correct and the other said similar itemms. i will say - don't be upset with your bf for his story about it - i thought it was quite lovely. realize, especially if he is in or may be heading out soon - he may not have wanted you to think about him heading into battle.....
