unfortunately they do pick in their sleep, if there is no medical reason for it.

My sister has the exact same problem. Sometimes a blood vessel is naturally closer to the nose than most others and can bleed easily when disturbed. If the bloody noses are becoming regular (anything more than once a week) you should probably contact a doctor to seek a good solution. Many times however during seasonal changes these sort of things happen, don't worry about it too much unless they're regular. Just get that paper towel out and keep their head tilted back!

Common causes of nosebleeds include colds, allergies, and sinus infections; low humidity; and trauma (like nose picking, a foreign object in the nose, blowing the nose too hard, or being hit in the nose). Sometimes an anatomical problem (like an abnormal structure or growth in the nose) can cause bleeding, as can certain drugs.
When is the last time your child has had a check up. Maybe he developed allergies that you are not aware of.

It is that time of year where allergies are bad and the body's just not acting right. I don't have kids but I was a teacher for a few years and remember my kids would get nose bleeds all the time. It's allergy season so the nose is really dry.

A person can have sinus problems and not have allergies. Have you asked a doctor? You might want to try a humidifier even if you don't think the room is dry.

He's picking his nose. Some kids get bloody noses when they do that. His nails could be too long or are ragedy or, most likely, he's just picking too much, too often. He's at that age.
