Your car is equipped with a 1.6L A series engine. You can swap it out with no modifications with any other A series engine. 4AGE, 4AFE, 4AGZE, 4A-C, 4AG, 4A-GLC, or 7AFE. I would recommend the 4AGZE, it is a supercharged engine from an MR2. But you would have to change out the wiring harness and ECU. The exhaust system may also have to be modified. If you have to have "turbo" I would recommend the 7AFE which is a 1.8L. Then you can buy a turbo kit from importperformanceparts.net. The kit will be for a 93-97, but every thing will work, only possible problem is the down pipe, but any fabricator will make you a down pipe and exhaust that will work. If you swap it out for a 7AFE, then you can do some real damage by also buying a 4AGZE, and 20v 4AGE. You can swap the 20v head onto the 7AFE block and bottom end. Then put on the supercharger from the 4AGZE on that head. Then buy the same turbo kit I specified earlier, and you will come up with a 1.6L stroked to a 1.8L with 11:1 compression, twin charged 20 valve engine. A 7AGTZE will be your new engine code. But this very hard to do successfully and very costly. But it can be done, just ask anyone on the forums at 6gc.com. Note this is a site for celica's, but build the same engine types that you can transplant into your 89 corolla.

don't these things come with engines in them? well, if you are trying to create some kind of a super corolla, then i would advise you get the real deal. thats coz, i don't know where you live as for example here in australia to do that you will need to brakes capable of the extra power and the fact that its fwd, i don't know but probably even if you fix the other stuff, it could still be deemed unroadworthy.

I think you got a 4A-GE engine in there. 1.6L Straight 4. TRD AE101 (levin bottom end, with a custom yamaha 20 Valve head, engines maximum red line 12,000 r.p.m.) . Basically its the same engine only race-tuned. This one has about 50% more power
