I think its an urban legend. I can't find any mainstream news source which makes this claim - it seems to exist only in the blogosphere.

In contrast, a quick trip to the government's official website for the Grand Canyon National Park will show that the views of most scientists are accepted. For example:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rock layers formed during the Paleozoic Era are the most conspicuous in the Grand Canyon’s walls. Coastal environments and several marine incursions from the west between 550 and 250 million years ago deposited sandstone, shale and limestone layers totaling 2,400 to 5,000 feet thick. Layers from the Cambrian, Devonian, Mississippian, Pennsylvanian and Permian periods are present. Erosion has removed most Mesozoic Era evidence from the Park, although small remnants can be found, particularly in the western Grand Canyon.

However there was a brief stink in the mainstream media a few years ago when a Creationist book was featured in the park's bookstores. As a result of protests by employees and geologic organizations, the book was moved from the natural sciences section of the store, to the inspirational section.

I don't doubt that any attempt to silence Grand Canyon park employees would quickly be leaked and widely reported.
The fact that the mainstream media hasn't reported such censorship makes me doubtful that it ever happened.

It's only 10,000 years old. Ignore the geologists throwing stones.

I wouldn't put it past them, but this is a new one for me. I've never heard of this.
