I don't need anyone to say go to the pediatrician, we were there yesterday. Just wondering if there's any moms with some good home remidies, not to cure obviously, but to help a child or baby with the stomach virus. Throwing up and fabulously explosive diapers:)

I have 4 kids, and 3 of them have the stomach bug. One is a year old, one is almost 2, and the other is 4 years old.

I have tried the cola syrup, not doing it. I am making sure they're drinking, right now they're on the BRAT diet: bananas, rice, apples & toast. They can't keep any of it down, and if they do, they have the diaper issues.

Any moms have any ideas that have worked for them? I'm a little sick of cleaning up these messes and of course I want them to feel a little better until it passes. I've steam cleaned the living room 4 times in past 2 days!!!!

Yes, the 4 year old is drinking gatorade, and my 2 and 1 year old are drinking pedialyte.

They want to eat! I'd prefer liquid diet, but no they're still hungry, which is worse in my opinion

Oh boy, I remember this bug.
Clear liquids ONLY for at least 24 hours. Clear liquids includes pedialyte, jello, chicken broth, sprite or ginger ale, popsicles - you know the drill, you're a mom of 4.

After 24 hours clear liquids and 12 hours of no vomiting, try dry toast. If that holds, add any part of the BRATY diet (Y is for yogurt, plain or vanilla) . Yogurt's active cultures will help re-balance the gut. If you are uncertain about giving yogurt to your infant, check with the Dr. If at any time you have vomiting or diaper issues, go back to clear liquids.
This bug can have intestinal symptoms for well over a week, so if you start adding back foods and the diapers get bad again, just start over with the clear liquids and progress slowly throught the BRATY diet.

Honestly.. the best thing to do is keep them on a clear liquid diet. The more food stuff you give them the longer the bug will last. I bloody hate the stomach flu. My kids get it 2xyear and always at Christmas. ahem.. sorry. Clear liquids, but not too sweet like straight juice as the sugar will also encourage the diarrhea. There are over the counter meds such as gravol that works well and if by mouth doesn't work then use the ..sorry kids... suppository form. Once you control the vomiting they can keep fluids down and they will be more comfortable. I keep a bucket by each bed and a towel under it and everywhere to protect the bed sheets and floor. I feel for you and hope it passes quickly. Oh and use a very good spray like lysol etc to clean the door knobs etc and wash everything! I also used latex gloves when cleaning up the messes to try to keep down the spread of the bug. Worked well I did not get sick the last time around. Good luck!

I feel for you. So not fun!!
I visited my friend for a few weeks, she has 4 kids, I have two and my other friend had1. They ALL had gatro at the same time. So there we are with 7 kids puking and pooing eerywhere. Only three were old enough to look after themselves a little bit.
We tried all sorts of things, definately NO MILK. In the end we resorted to rasberry cordial. I dont know how but this works really well. Any type of drink with rasberry. It works wonders.
The other kids did the BRAT diet but my girls just wouldnt eat anything.
So I just made up a packet of those 2 min noodles. Then let them drink the liquid from it. Once they kept everything down for a few hours and they were hungry I would try noodles with the liquid.
We also had pedilyte ice blocks, we had to pretend they were our favourites and we were upset the kids got to have them. But because they were sick they had the really special ice blocks. And we didn't.
Try and keep them taking a sip of water/pedilyte every 5 min or so. And as much love you can fit in between all the vomit and poop!!!
Good Luck :)

The only thing that has ever helped my children with the stomach bug is to just have them sip a tablespoon or two of liquid at a time about ever ten to fifteen minutes. that way it's not enough for their stomach to convulse and throw it back up and they get the liquid their body needs. Please don't give them gatorade it has so much sugar and will only give them diarhea. Pedialyte is best but water is ok too. You will have to do this for a while, ntil they get rehydrated. I wouldn't give them anything to eat for a few hours until they can keep the liquid down. Just try it for a few hours, I promise that it works.

We just went through this one a few weeks back. We all had it by the time it was over.

First of all, NO SOLID FOOD! Food will feed the virus. Just give fluids such as gatorade, water, even popsicles. When they go a few hours without vomiting then try some chicken broth (plain). Keep a trash can or bucket with doubled up bags inside beside their beds or the couch (wherever they sleep).

Buy lysol spray and spray the toilet seat and lid, all door knobs, toys, and even the mouthpieces of your phones.

My daughter only had it for two days. My son who is three had it for a full eight. We went to the doc about three times in all and it was the same thing everytime, Don't feed solids. I know its hard cuz you feel like you are starving them, but try popsicles.

Good luck and God BLess

Acidophilus or babydophilus. You can get it at almost any health food store. Tell them that it is for a baby with a stomach virus and they will tell you the dosage. This was the ONLY thing that worked for my baby girl when she was about 6 months old. After 2 days she was back to normal and drinking plenty of water again.

Usually when kids get a stomach virus and they have the "runs" and won't drink enough water and stuff, they complete deplete the beneficial bacteria that they have in their intestines. Replenishing that is what you need to do so that her body can handle foods again and, more importantly, it will make her want to drink water.

Take away that syrup and the fruit, also take away surgery things and milk products. give them a lot of fluid to replace what is lost in the runs...as meal make them chicken soup with chicken carrots, celery onions salt. Aldo soda crackers and jello, the toast if it is white bread that's ok. Have them on this for the next 2 or 3 days until the problem gets better. Like I said the fruit could be making it worst as for the runs. Apples and bananas as well as that syrup you mentioned as a tendency to make many go...and if the problem is they are going to much leave those things out. Before I forget ginger is great for stomach upset make them ginger tea, you just slice or dice it up and boil..since they are children you could put a bit of surger in it so it tastes good to them. Even though ginger doesn't have a bad taste. It's also great for nausea. Best wishes to you and the children.

For one, dont worry so much about them eating. After their last vomiting episode, wait a while and give them small sips of liquid, preferably gatorade or pedialite. After they can keep larger amounts of liquids down, then try small amounts of food. Banana's are good because they replace lost potassium. It should be coming to an end soon. Its been 2 days, so I would say that its almost over. I feel for you. I went through this plenty of times when my kids were little. I would take them back to the doctors if their not better in a couple of days. They could become dehydrated and that wouldnt help matters. Good luck. I feel for you! YUK!!!

I know this sounds odd, but give them a TINY bit of puffed rice (such as rice krispies). Often times it is light enough that it is easier to keep down then boiled rice, bananas or toast, which can be heavy on the stomach.

Other then that, keep up with the liquids.

As well, it has actually been proven that herbal teas and chicken noodle soup do have some healing properties (although, I wouldn't be feeding them herbal tea without consulting a pharmacist/physician).

Good luck!!...

Okay this sounds awful but it does work. Boil white rice, drain the water into a pitcher add a little sugar and have the kids drink it. The starch helps get rid of the diarrhea and its light enough that it shouldn't cause any vomiting. My grandma did that every time one of us got sick. I use it on my kids now and it typically works in a few hours. Good luck.
