I'm betting the rat dies. If you have reason to believe the rat was diseased, you may want to take the carcass to your vet to be tested for rabies. Most likely your dog will be fine.

You'll probably want to take your pet to the veterinarian and explain that he/she had contact with a rat. Most likely, the dog will be fine, but since rats can be rabies carriers along with some other nasty stuff it's better to get things checked out. Though rat poisons can poison dogs too, unless the rat had ingested a large amount and the dog ingested most of the rat, it's unlikely to cause any issues, but again your vet can tell you more about this.

This is my personal nightmare. My Chow dogs kill anything they can get their teeth into.

Get the rat away from your dog and do NOT allow it to eat the meat. Contact your vet. You MUST have up-to-date rabies shots on your dog. If you do not, the rat needs to be tested for rabies to see if your animal has been compromised.

Anthrax and Bubonic Plague occur naturally in my area of Texas - so we have to test for that too.

Next nightmare - if the rat has consumed rat poison, and has yet to die from it - your dog could now be poisoned.
Watch for blood shot eyes, bleeding gums, and worse indicator of all - bloody stool. You dog would need emergency shots of Vitamin K to reverse the effects.

If you know there are rats in your area - set traps regularly away from the dog's reach and get them removed from your area.

Call your vet with the specific details and let them help you assess your risk.

Take care, hon. --Peace!

Depends if it's a playful bite or a warning bite. If it's a playful bite, like if the rat isnt leaking (if you know what i mean), then both'll be fine. If it was a warning bite, most likely the rat'll die. As the other users said, call the vet and ask about the carcass, etc.

The rat cries, sues, and then dies. The dog goes to the vet for a check up and shots and possible quarantine. .
