I have a hard problem saying no to ppl .... so now because of this problem, I am now stuck with these two cats. I love them dearly but they shed their fur all over my apt. What should I do?? Should I take them to the SPCA or should I try to give them back to the original owners? The reason why they don't want them anymore is because nicole is pregnant. What should I do??

Unfortunately if you take them to the SPCA you run the risk of them being put down. I think it is unfair that the original owners put you in a position where you have to make this decision. I would try and find homes for them but if you can't then you have to do what you have to do.

If the reason the original owners does not want the cats is because someone is pregnant, perhaps you could discuss them taking them back after the baby's birth.

Also, it is somewhat of a misconception that having cats is dangerous for pregnant women. There is a danger of toxoplasmosis, but it is truly something that can be contracted from nearly everywhere. The fecal matter of cats that have been exposed to the disease is somewhat more potent, though. So, the preganant woman should be fine if she avoided changing the litter. If the cats are indoor cats, the likelihood of them carrying toxoplasmosis is incredibly slim, as well. Truthfully, there is little to worry about as long as some precautions are taken. So, maybe if enlightened, the owners would want the cats back?

I don't know...anyway, I'm reluctant to tell you to give the to the SPCA because there is a very real risk of euthanasia. If none of this works, you could probably find a home for them via advertisements....Good luck

If you try ways to deal with the fur and none of them work for you, I'd go ask the original owners if they'd like the cats back first, due to the risk that the cats might be put to sleep. Nicole is worried about getting toxoplasmosis from the cats, right? I've listed a few sites below that give some advice on that - it looks like she would be fine as long as she doesn't change the litter box herself and doesn't leave the baby and cat alone together after the baby is born. She can also talk to her doctor about additional ways to protect herself and to check if she is immune to toxoplasmosis (then there's no problem, unless there are other reasons they don't want these cats that they haven't told you).

If you would like to try to keep the kitties try getting one of those shed ender combs. They worked for me. I have a long hair simease. If you cant keep them just take them to the spca. Obviously the original owners are not wanting them. If the only reason is she is pg. good luck i hope this helped.

PS. ask if it is temporary first and if so have them get the comb and everything else for it.

I just wanted to put this in. When I was pregnant my OB asked if I had cats and how long i had been around them and the litter box. As i told her all my life. I was informed that the chance of contacting toxoplasmosis was slim to none. If you are around them long enough your body develops an imunity to it. Just check yourself on emptying litter box and get the lowest possible dust litter available. that and make sure the cat is cool with baby. Otherwise the whole family (including kitties) will be happy and healthy.

Use your local paper. I have saved many cats from people who did not want them anymore for various reasons. I run the ad, People call, and I take them to them. This way I can see who is getting them, and what type of environment they are going to. I have had to turn down people. Don't sent them to the SPCA. If you have to try to find a no-killer shelter.
