The file is approximately 20 pages. I double-clicked the icon (not the shortcut) and it said that The document name or path is invalid. It suggests that I check the file permissions for the file or drive or Use the file open dialogue box to locate the file. It is in a My Documents folder.

What should I do?

Also, all files in the same subfolder as that file are doing that too, and the files in the folders adjacent to the folder the file in question is in also does that. Other files don't do that and open normally.

Is it possible that when you saved the file, you might have accidentally saved it in a different location than that indicated by the icon?

Try a search.
cl Start
cl Find
cl File or folder
where it says "content" -- type a unique phrase that is in the document - it must be spelled exactly as it appears in the document and something you think will not be in too many files.
cl Search and see what comes up.
