Earthworms generally live in the spaces within soil. When it rains, their "homes" become flooded, and they move to higher ground. This is why after it rains, you will find earthworms on the sidewalk, driveway, roads, and anyplace above the soil.

Rain drowns them out of their holes and they crawl around and get caught in water puddles. They don't have much of a brain and, kind of like some young people, don't use much of what they do have.

did they come down in the rain (it really has rained frogs)
or crawl up the side of the boat to get away from flooded
