In familiar situations, people use them indistinctively.
However, they are not the same. IDIOMA is the spoken languages in different linguistic groups, like English, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, etc.
LANGUAGE refers to any system of symbols that has a specific meaning and representation, which is used for communicating; sign language, diagrams, computer programs are all examples of languages.
I hope this helps!

idioma = idiom, language, tongue
lenguaje = language (audible articulate human speech; method of expression; style of expresing oneself; symbolic meaning attached to some things)
So, I would say idioma is written language and
lenguaje is oral language.
