I think it depends on how nice the neighborhood is and how responsible the child is. You might want to make sure there aren't any registered sex offenders in the neighborhood or a high crime rate.

I don't know the right age, I guess it is different for everyone, my oldest is 11 and I still walk her to school everyday, there is so much violence and so many sexual offenders out in the streets, I guess I will let them when the laws change and sexual offenders are where they should be-put away somewhere. Many children are violent now too, so this is yet another reason why I don't let my kids walk alone.

I would NEVER EVER let my child walk alone to school!!!
period. There are too many predators lurking around, just
waiting for just such an occurance. I would not even let a child
go into a public restroom alone. If you think your purse can be
snatched fast--your child can be snatched faster. Maybe
when the kids in college, I would let them walk alone--I'm
an over-protective mother. Better safe than sorry.
P.S.-You just told every pedofile on the web where you live
and that your child walks 7 minutes away to school - alone.

Well last year my 2nd grader walked to school by his self but the school was literally in our back yard. We live about 1/4 mile from our new school now and I think I am going to let him walk next year in 4th grade...he will be 9

20. But we live in a reality that doesn't allow us that kind of time. If there are older kids that you know and trust at the bus stop you can ask of of them to walk your child. I won't let mine walk alone until they are big enough to push me down and take my purse.lol. Just be careful. Hindsight's 20/20, foresight's reading the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children's website, and Court TV's missing person's message board.

Personally, I would NEVER let my children walk to school alone. I know that may seem a bit over protective, but in today's society, one can't be too careful. Every single day, there are stories on the news about children being snatched up left and right. You just can't let children out of your sight these days!

18!!!! LOL! :-) I'm not sure, but I think I would at least walk with them and follow them a few times first. If possible, see if neighbor kids can walk together in a group for safety. And ofcourse, keep repeating the "stranger" speech.
