Do a base coat in an undiluted solid color like pale grey or beige. Using a feather (goose quill is good) dip the feather tip in a darker color than the base - dark gray, burnt umber, etc. - and lightly trail it through the wet base coat in random veinlike patterns. Soften the "veins" with a fan brush or by "tonking". Tonking is done by pressing a clean piece of cloth - old t-shirt is good - against the canvas or surface and lifting it straight off.
