Because you don't regularly brush him like you are suppose to, he probably smells because of it too which intern would be a good reason as to why you are bathing him! Go to your local pet shop and pick up a dog brush, be sure to brush him weekly to eliminate the odar and hair!

We have a full breed german shephard and our vet told us when she was a puppy NOT to give her baths. If you do it will dry out their skin and take away their natural oils. I can honestly say in the 11 1/2 years we have had her she has only had one bath due to a major mess in her cage many years ago. We brush her on a weekly basis and we have never had any problems with a smell from her.... other then when she is out in the rain and she comes in wet... but once she dries off she smells normal again... many people have commented on the fact that she never smells and always ask us why lol

The same reason humans seem to loose a lot of hair when shampooing. You wash a dog -- you loosen up all that fur.
Plus the stress of bathtime makes them "blow coat."

The only way you can keep the shedding managable is to brush, brush, and brush.
Don't just brush the surface, you have to get all the way down into the undercoat. Pull the brush through gently, that undercoat is dense. Besides, it'll give you the opportunity to inspect the dog's skin and make sure it's healthy. Have plenty of paper bags ready to collect all that shed. I swear I could have knitted a couple of sweaters from one brushing off my GS.

GS are bad shedders and their hair weaves into the nap of the furniture. I finally slip covered everything.
It was worth it, GSs are GREAT dogs!

Well you can't be grooming him all too often, are you? You need to go to your local pet shop and buy a brush to brush out all of the fur that he is shedding. Try getting a "rake" brush with hard bristles as they will be better when grooming a dog like a GSD.

i have the same issue. it's because the water/soap just drys out the skin enough that the hairs get loose and fall out more easily. if you notice a common remedy for dogs that shed alot is to add salmon oil to their food so as you can imagine having dry skin after getting all wet is a bit more extreme. theres really nothing you can do. i add salmon oil to my dogs food, by the way she eats very good food(Innova), and she still looses lots of hair after a bath.

Another reason could be nutritional deficiencies.. I'll bet dollars to donuts that the food your dog is getting isn't supplying the nutrition he needs.
