My Mom had a heart attack a year ago and has since changed her total way of living. She exercises every day and has totally changed her diet. She has cut out alot of fats, eats alot of organics and health foods and only uses olive oil. She has even lost about 25 pounds.
*She just found out today that her cholesterol is 100 points higher than it was 6 months ago.* What is going on?

I am a nursing student- First things first are they doing a "total" cholesterol test or LDL's only? If they are doing a "total" test they are highly inaccurate, but they are cheap.(that's why they're used soo often.) Second LDL is the smallest forn of cholesterol found in the body and the one responsible for causing atherosclerosis. (narrowing of the coronary arteries) She needs to have her LDL levels checked. They should be less than 100mg per deciliter.

Diet and exercise alone are not always enough to lower your cholesterol as my mother is going through the same thing. If she is not on meds to lower it she really needs to start and get this under control before she winds up having another heart attack.

Maybe it's a genetic thing for her. Call the doctor and see if she can be put on medication.

It could be something hereditary. Is your mother taking the pills she should?
