Tourette's was once considered a rare and bizarre syndrome, most often associated with the exclamation of obscene words or socially inappropriate and derogatory remarks (coprolalia). However, this symptom is present in only a small minority of people with Tourette's.

The derogatory remarks would have to be learned first before they would be able to verbalize it.

ANSWER:

People can only repeat what they hear and learn, and that includes Tourettes sufferers. HOWEVER: a very small percentage of TS patients suffer from this symptom and it is not a requirement for a diagnosis ~ ie: most people with TS NEVER display this symptom. It is usually simple motor or phonic tics. Unfortunately, they have to suffer the undue ridicule due to the sensationalizing of it by idiots.
