A study was undertaken by Maben and Macleod (1998) to explore the issues around the preparation of newly registered project 2000 nurses. They indicated in their study to the concerns about the newly qualified nurses clinical competency and identified the deficits in their clinical skills, life science and pharmacology, but at the same time showed that these skills deficit were made up within the first six months after qualifying and clinical supports. They stated that preceptorship has a significant role in facilitating post registration development of nursing practice and improving patient care
