Without changing too much of what you originally wrote, this is an error-free edit....

The word deficit would be too strong a word to use in spoken English, but in this case it is ok.

In 1998, Maben and Macleod studied some nursing students who are expected to be registered by the year 2000. The study was focused on finding out how well-prepared they are to tackle actual nursing duties right after registration. Based solely on academic preparation, It was found that the nurses were exhibiting deficiency in the areas of clinical skills, life science and pharmacology. However, the same deficiencies markedly improved when the nurses were made to take a 6-month Preceptorship Program. Being part of the Program allowed the nurses to actually experience patient care and other duties. This practical experience resulted in the significant development of their nursing skills.
