Best suggestion i can give you..... build one. Yep, buy the frame you want and the fork you want then buy a build kit with parts that you wish to have. If you want a freeride hardtail, try a Cove Stiffee FR or Jackal from Cannondale. Banshee has the Morphine and the Scirocco which are very nice too. You can get a build kit with Shimano XT components or SRAM x.9 components for about 500-800 and taht includes Hydraulic disc brakes too plus a wheel set and tires. At 2000, you can get pretty much anythign you want and have a great bike. The Mountain Cycle Rumble was the most popular choice from MTB review. Check out www.mtbr.com and read reviews about what people think about their individual parts/components.

If you're looking for a pre-built one, $2000 is just about enough to start looking into some of the middle-upper end HARDTAILS of many brands. If you're looking into frame material you can get a real nice aluminum, a carbon, or a used Titanium (on average).

These are some examples to look into (at or below $2000) that have had good reviews (on average) in past years:
Specialized StumpJumper Comp : http://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?spid=22272
Trek 8500 : http://www2.trekbikes.com/bikes/bike.php?bikeid=1056600&f=18
GT Zaskar Pro : http://www.gtbikes.com/mountain/catalog/detail.php?id=2957&country=UK&brand=moun
Scott Scale 40 : http://www.scottusa.com/product.php?UID=9709

As for the so-called luxury brands (if you have $3000+), I've listed some titanium framed ones you can look into:
Seven Sola: http://www.sevencycles.com/mountain_detail.php?bike=sola

Orbea Oiz: http://www.orbea-usa.com/fly.aspx?mid=a400&layout=viewproduct&taxid=236

Litespeed Ocoee: http://www.litespeed.com/bikes/new/ocoee.aspx#

These are just a few of the brands that stand out in my mind over many many brands. Keep in mind that sometimes in buying a popular brand you're also paying for the name so don't be afraid to look around a bit.

It really depends on What kind of Riding you plan to do. $2000 Can get you a lot of bike. I am a Kona fan myself they are very rugged frames but can be a bit heavy. Iron Horse also makes a few really great bikes. if you want light weight maybe a Titanium bike like Titus, but then your pushing the budget. Check out mtbr.com they have a lot of reviews by people who use the bikes. good luck

You may consider the Specialized M5 S-Works or a Trek 8000 with custom groupset to fits the bike with you.

That is not easy to answer. At $2000, you have LOTS of choices and a lot of shopping around to do. God luck.
