well, it was not the case that in the past if a person said 'God told me to kill him' that they were considered heroes.
Are you referring to the Bible? The Bible does not give this as an excuse for killing. In some cases in the Bible they're stories; in others perhaps it was justified.
In today's world we don't use that sort of language. But say someone was attacking a child in your presence and you killed the attacker in defending the child. Wouldn't you say you were inspired to do it by something? whether values, or ideals, or faith? Isn't it possible to imagine someone doing something like that and saying 'God told me to save that little child'? would YOU send such a hero to a mental institution?

Because now we know about mental illness and in older centuries before separation of Church and state , some of those men were legitimate military leaders that fought for their countries
