"Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Love is...?
I'm inclined to define love as a commitment to treat others with honesty, respect, kindness, compassion, understanding and with a sincerely selfless generosity which would not exclude forgiveness. I also see love as existing on a scale beginning with an impromptu and temporary love at one end and ending with the more profoundly permanent attachments on the other.
Love is a decision made out of morality. It is not derived out of holiness, but rather it is founded on sensible grounds - the religious "Golden Rule," "Do unto others...," is an all inclusive definition of how I understand the basics of love but it is then what and how one includes to the rule and how one specifically applies and practices his specific "doings unto" which truly gives love its definite.
How the bible defines love is more than likely some sort of contorted schizophrenia... "God is love," comes immediately to mind - very confusing. But, the bible tends to talk in circles, doesn't it, and it contradicts itself so very often that I don't think its idea on anything can be trusted for very much.
There is no single specific definition to what love truly is - we each have our own perspective on it according to what we've learned.... and far to often, I'm sad to say, it shows.
Lenon and McCartney stated their philosophical opinion musically, that: "All you need is love." I tend to agree with then in general. The god-based religions all seem to tout the same philosophy but they do so only under certain conditions of rule keeping; but here, too, I can find some reasons for agreement.
In fact, I don't place a high value on love... I place love in a secondary role to truth. Where love is primarily an emotional issue, truth is an intellectual one and it is my belief that only by sorting out the ultimate truth of man in his universe, factually and finally, that love can ever truly be known.

POST SCRIPT to shaolt20…: Why in the world did you even bother to try and answer this if all you could contribute is that there are a variety of answers. Gosh.! How moronic is that? And since the topic of this question is love... please don't think that I've criticized your response in a hateful way when in fact it is meant as a "nudge in the right direction" ...generously.

Bible's definition of love: Very conditional: God loves you if you were Christian, other than that, you're doomed to the lake of fire.
- I disagree of course, God's love should be unconditional.
My definition: A special emotion that can have a wide diversity, starting from loving your pet, to loving the whole world, forgetting superficial differences such as skin's color, beliefs, sexual orientation or anything else.

depends on what type of love you are speaking of. Love in terms of Gods love is agape, shich is seeking the best for others without repuiring reciprocation. Phileo, or brotherly, frind family love, is giving but it is not givin without some reciproctation. 1 John 2: 7-11, 15-17,3:11-24; Jn 15:9-13 13:34,35, 3:16(obvious one there) Rom 8:32, 12:9 are all references of love.......... i believe the bible as the absolute truth sooo yes i believe its true

The Bible's definition of love is one of the will. It chooses to love even the unlovable. It is selfless and giving love.
I agree wholeheartedly.
My definition of love is the same as the Bible's, but I often fall short.

Greater love than this has no man: than a man should lay his own life down for a friend. Putting the good of another ahead of your own good is God's definition of love.
I don't think I can improve on that.

Love is patient, love is kind.
It does not envy, it does not boast,
it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking,
it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails

No greater love than a person lay down their life for their friends.
I can not say I love that much, but, I try to help everyone when I can and do not worry about what they believe.
