I think he was a very spiritual person who examined religious possibilities and then made a choice. During the time that he was a current popular singer, many people were looking at unconventional religions (unconventional for British and American people, that is), and he found what he was looking for.

so he chose 'Cat' because his girlfriend said he had cat eyes and he thought also that people in England and the U.S.liked pets.
3. He became muslim because he had a near death experience whilst swimming off Malibu in California. He swore to god that if god saved him, then he would do god's work.
