well first thing is work out with him run, jog, or walk to get the heart rate up. Then the diet is important you shoul eat 5 or 6 small meal a day that what speed up you metabolism. You shoul lose weight in no time

Stay away from processed foods and sugars, like chips and cakes, and eat fruits and vegies!
Drink water, should anyways, stay away from sodas no matter what..... even diet.
Get active, dance that is fun, walk, run, jog, play with a dog. Be a kid and play! We all miss those days.

The ability to lose 10 pounds in 5 weeks? If you eat more food (energy source) than you use in a day, your body converts the extra energy into fat and stores it somewhere on your body for you to use later. Trouble is, once it is converted to fat, your body prefers to use any new source of energy first (for exampe that hamburger and french fries you just ate). So what is required to lose weight is to use more energy than you consume.
He should seek advice from his family doctor before starting any weight reduction program.
He has to have 10 pounds of fat to lose begin with because you don't want a 12 year old to lose lean muscle mass.
He should drink water. It can be soda water (but not with any additives or flavouring).... at least 8 glasses per day. Water has next to no energy but provides a means by which the body can rid itself of the bi-products of converting fat back into energy... He can put a glass of milk on his cerial, but he should avoid full cream milk for now.
He should avoid all take away, processed and packaged food (it usually is high in trans fats which are easily absorbed and stored). Pack home made sandwiches with meat and salad in it... no peanut butter etc.. read the fat content on the packet of everything you intend to eat.... somethings like peanut butter are around 50% fat! He should eat fresh fruit and vegetables, baked chicken (no skin), fish (not fried)... and avoid french fries, chocolate, crisps and candy completely. Foods that are high in sugar provide lot of energy with little volume... so you still feel hungry but the extra energy from high sugar foods gets converted by the body into fat. Then you eat more because you are hungry and all that excess energy gets converted to fat too.
Now.. to increase his metabolism (the ability to use the stored fat for energy) he needs to exercise vigorously at least 1 hour per day. That is because to maintain 1 pound of muscles you require about 12 times as much energy than to maintain 1 pound of fat... so the more muscle you have the more energy you need to maintain them. Exercise increases the need for muscle and your body responds by growing them.
For exercise, he can use a programmed exercise machine, or just ride his bike flat out for 45 mins. (allow a bit of time afterwards to cool down), he can run, or swim. He needs to be doing aerobic exercises.
Will he lose 10 pounds in 5 weeks after doing this? Not sure. We are all different... but by the time May comes around he will be feeling a whole lot healthier and his efforts will start to show.... and he should be encouraged to continue for 6 months and by then he will be a lean mean manly machine.

If he drinks alot of soda just make sure he drinks diet soda's..you can loose alot of weight just going to diet drinks...Also you guys can go walking that really helps also...and tell him to try and not eat anything after 5 pm..good luck and take care

tell him if he's drinking pop to stop and he will drop the weight quiclky as all that pop does is put on weight becuase of all the sugar in it.
