It's great that you aren't expecting to get a purebred puppy from a breeder for only $50 - $250. I think you should take a look at http://www.petfinder.com to find a dog in a shelter that needs a loving home. Just type in what breed you would like and your state/zip code. I think a good breed that would be a Beagle or Beagle mix. They are small-medium in size, excellent with children, easy to train, smart but have a few health problems and are Hounds so, they will wonder when given the chance. They are short haired so must be an inside dog, you must have a fenced yard and never let the dog off the leash when in public as if they find an interesting scent, they will follow it.

Try researching your local rescues. A lot of them have good dogs for aroun a $50-$100 donation. Also, I know of people who got Golden Retreivers from a Golden Retreiver rescue for about $80, and the only thing was that they were supposed to be learning how to be guide dogs, and they failed, so now they are looking for good homes. If you can think of a specific dog that you want, I'm sure there are rescues for them everywhere. Go online, do some research, and good luck in finding your perfect friend!

We went online to an organization called, "Pet Rescue," or "Pet Finders." You can type in the age, breed (or mix), size, etc. of a pet you're looking for and eventually you might find one. This is a wonderful organization of volunteers. We got a chocolate lab mix, naturally named "Hershey," from these people a few years ago, and she's a great dog. They are not kept in cages while waiting for adoption, but in foster families' homes.

Head for the animal shelter nearest you. Every animal there needs a loving home. Their health has been checked, in most cases spaying or neutering is part of the package and the adoption cost is minimal if any. That loving home could be yours! Toodles!

you can get a dog at a breeder, or a shelter. if you get one from a shelter think about it you are happy because you got a dog and the dog will be happy because you just saved its life.

go to an animal shelter, like the Humane society, the dogs are usually around 100 or less.

Do a search on Petfinders for shelters in your area. They also have a classified ads section where people post their animals that they are looking to rehome.
