Get a smart one.

Border collies if you are in the country. They are among the smartest. They need to run because they are herding dogs. They are loyal, easy to train, and good natured generally.

Lap dog (small) is a papillion. They are faithful, smart and easy to train although expensive.

Don't get a Jack Russel or terrier type, they are neurotic and noisy.

If you are older - don't get a dog you can't easily lift and carry. You will need to bathe them which means lifting them and when they age you also will have to lift and help them.

A good choice is going to a shelter and finding a good tempered mix of the size breed you want to rescue. They generally are grateful to you for saving them. Look for one that isn't jumping around and barking crazily but not one that is cowering in the back and looking mean. Talk to the dog and see what sort of a response you get. They will let you know very quickly if they like you and you will go with your first impressions too. Trust that. You will have a faithful friend for many years.

It depends on your personality and your lifestyle. For me the best breed is an American Pit Bull Terrier. I adopted a 1 year old pit bull from the animal shelter not too long ago. She has been perfect for us. I wanted a medium/large breed short coated dog. And I wanted a dog with the energy to take long walks every day, and play hard, but also relaxed enough to be able to watch a movie on the couch. This is a pit bull. Plus they are naturally sweet natured dogs with good socialization and training. She loves kids, adults, dogs, and cats. Her two best friends are my kitties. Plus, she is very smart. She came to us with no leash manners, she didn't know any basic obedience, and she was not house trained. Within only a few weeks she has learned all of this. She is perfect. But for you, you have to look at the size of the dog, how much grooming you want to do, and how much energy you have to exercise your dog.

This is a great website to look at different dog breeds. I always recommend adopting from a shelter because these dogs are in need of a home, and they often make the best pets. Good Luck finding your dog!!

I agree with a mutt from a shelter, pound, etc.
But you need to look at your lifestyle, your exercise amount, if you can afford to have a dog that needs to be groomed all the time, if you want a dog that constantly sheds, or only sometimes, if you want a hyper or calm dog, a puppy or adult, a dog that is good with kids, other animals, etc..
Theres a lot to consider. A dog is not just an inpulse buy!
Good luck, and I hope you find a great dog for you (hopefully from a pound or shelter. They really are the best dogs. Thats where mine are from!)

That depends on a lot of things. Are you looking for a quiet dog, a lively dog, a big dog, a little dog, do you have kids, etc? Figure out what you want from the dog, and what kind of home you can provide, and then select a breed that suits you best. It is worth investigating thoroughly to avoid mistakes.

Not one good answer. It depends on what you want out of a dog. Some are high energy and if that fits your lifestyle, choose one of those breeds. Some are very low energy. Some are lap dogs. Some are happiest with a job. Some are better with children. I'll look for a good research site for you.

Sometimes a mutt from the pound is the best choice. :-)
They have purebreds too. There, you can spend some time with the dogs and see which one you connect with.

well it depends on a bunch of different factors. If you have a small house or apartment, or don't have a lot of free time to devote to giving the dog the exerise it needs, I would go for a toy dog. If you don't want to worry about brushing it every day, go for a dog with a easy to care for coat. Other then that, it's up to you what breed you get. I'd recomend going to an animal shelter for your new dog, because there are a lot of dogs there that deserve a good home.

For loyalty you want a ridgeback female because the female of the species is more loyal to her master and family.

For protection you want a bullterrior male ,his master is his life.

For the family you want a maltesse male, they just want to be loved they are not aggressive ,but they will guard there family.

We have a rottie (4months) and a French Mastive(6yrs), they are both very good dogs. It all depends on how you train them and if you do train them you need to do it when they are puppies.

Take care.

The type that wins your heart when you go to look at him.If he is trying to get you to notice him..It doesn't matter the breed --its a decision you must make. You will be responsible for his welfare.
