If you ever find out the real answer, let me know!!!
My kitty LOVES the tub! He will sit on the edge or on the bath mat while someone is taking a shower and then when you get out, he jumps in. I try to remember to rinse the tub really well though, because he likes to lick the water at the bottom and I don't want the soap to make him sick.
He also loves to just watch the tub drip after it is turned off. He is really funny this way. I often find him just laying on his side in the middle of the tub when it is not wet, so it makes me wonder if he likes the coolness too.
So, I guess you could say, I really don't know WHY they do it, but I think it is really cute and fun to watch!
On another note, I have to add this too. It is kind of hard to tell if you are just curious, or annoyed with this behavior. Hopefully it is just curious -- but if you are annoyed, I will tell you what I told my (ex)husband. He always used to complain about it and say that he was "spreading germs" all over. Well, I always said to him, "wouldn't you rather have him doing that in the bathroom than on the kitchen counter???"
So, just enjoy your kitty and laugh at their antics. They are better than television at times!!!

My cats do it all the time, too. Mine are weird, though. They sit on the ledge between the shower curtains while people are in the shower and don't care about getting wet. Maybe they like the cool feeling of the acrylic. One caveat: a cat with a urinary tract infection may go to the tub a lot to urinate, because it's more comfortable for it. Watch for differences in litter box behavior and water consumption. But it's likely that you just have a cute kitten : )

lol mine too. Yeah she's about a year old, anyways when I'm taking a shower she sits on this bench in my bathroom and just waits for me to finish. As soon as I open the curtain, she jumps into the tub and starts slapshing in the little bit of water that's left in it and loves to scratch at the walls and stuff. Cats are so weird....and adorable! :o)

I have a big fat Russian Blue that loves to lay in our garden tub. I think he likes it because it is cool on his body and he can stretch out. Sometimes I will walk into the bathroom and he will actually be laying in the tub on his back.

My cat is fascinated with anything having to do with running water, bathtubs, flushing toilets, water being poured into her dish. She comes in to watch us take showers. Weird thing is, she hates baths of her own and screams like a banshee if she is washed.

It sorta goes with cats in the box theory. They found a cozy hidden place. Mine even sleeps in the bathroom sink.

Most just like it because it's cooler and a place to hide.
