Altruism is an act of total unselfishness. You think only about the help that another needs without consideration for yourself.

A young man had a convulsion and fell onto the subway track in NYC and another man, knowing the train was coming, jumped down and covered the man with is body to shield him from harm. He did not think of his own safety or the fact he could have been seriously injured himself he just did it because someone else was in need more than he was. That is a totally altruistic act.

Altruism meaning unselfishness, self-sacrifice, humanity, selflessness, philanthropy. If we analyse these synonyms then we can say a person's unselfish self-sacrifice for humanity. Self-sacrifice does not mean sacrifice of one's life but one's self interest in the greater interest of the humankind. Thus it is selflessness. Self-sacrifice, in more accurate sense is kindness or being kind to humankind.

Humanity also does not come from nowhere. Humanity is defined as God created or given humanity, who is submissive to the God, The Creator. Thus it is humanity (kindness) for God's given human and other beings in a broader sense. When we bring in the broader sense, there comes a conflict of interest between humankind and other beings. As such altruism is a sensible self-sacrifice or selflessness or kindness. It is the generosity or charity towards human and towards animals in an unselfish manner.

Altruism is selfless concern for the welfare of others. It is a traditional virtue in many cultures, and central to many religious traditions. In English, this idea was often described as the Golden rule of ethics. In Buddhism it is considered a fundamental property of human nature.

I always saw altruism as "goodness". When someone is altruistic they are good to those they come in contact with. It's not a dictionary definition, but that's my personal meaning for it. Blessings in the Light of Christ!

I seem to remember it has the same root as the word 'altitude'. So it's to do with something high.

In this case, placing someone else's interests higher than your own. I guess selfless would be another word for it.
