I heard tonight on CBS Evening News that fishermen in Seattle want the Sea Lions killed because they are eating all their salmon.....how sad is it when we want to kill innocent sea lions? They are beautiful creatures who were probably confused as to where they were and ended up at the dam in Seattle, Washington. Now they are firing bullets at them in the water to scare them away from the salmon. I mean come on people, go to another place to fish...who cares that there are a lot of salmon there? Let the Sea Lions eat! My question to you is, do you think it is right that we should kill Sea Lions....who are an endangered species (as well as salmon mind you who the fishermen are fishing for)??

I totally agree with the first poster. I'm going to start volunteering soon at the Georgia Aquarium, and once I get introduced to the right people, i'm going to bring up what they are doing to them, who, who knows, maybe I can start up something!

Basically, what it is in truth is that the fisherman have a hard job and a hard life. They are completely absorbed by their responsibilities as fisherman and believe being soft-hearted or kind such as to sea lions is a sign of weakness and makes them effeminate. They have a job to do is to catch fish, salmon, and the sea lions gotta go as far as they are concerned because they are bringing in enough money to keep a roof over their families heads.

If these magnificent animals are to be saved it won't be from the hard-working fisherman supporting their families suddenly having a case of conscience, it will be from law-makers and people like you that love these animals if they are not being shot anymore.

No, sea lions are not confused about going after salmon. They are experts at it. The reason for all the fuss is that the sea lions are feeding at a bottleneck that thousands of salmon have to pass through and sea lions can make a big dent in the fish population. The guy who said they're just fish doesn't get it. They're an important food resource and a lot of people depend on them to make a living. Nobody depends on sea lions either for food or to earn a living.

This is an ongoing problem for decades. Sea lions have been captured and released hundreds of miles away and the find their way back in a few days.

I agree that it's a shame to disturb the noble beasts but it's a choice between them and thousands of valuable fish. This isn't about upsetting the delicate balance of nature - it's too late for that. It's about managing resources.

I personally think the fish should be protected even if it means upsetting a few sea lions and a few tree huggers.

Incidentally, there's nothing endangered about sea lions. There's a whole lot of them.

I have stood at the Ballard Locks in Seattle and have watched as sea lions take one or two bites from a large salmon before discarding it and finding another, leaving large portions of salmon unused and wasted. I have also seen a number of tactics taken to rid the area of sea lions - including transporting them to CA (most returned to the locks in a weeks time), sound blasting the area to drive them away, and creating a large orca decoy to scare them off. Nothing has worked.
The salmon returning to spawn last year were far below expected levels (which aren't high to begin with). Demand for salmon is high and numbers are dwindling. Unfortunately, sea lions are determined to feed outside the dam-ladders and, last time I checked, are not endangered. Sadly, seals lose this battle.

Yes it is absolutely absurd for the fishermen to blame sea lions for diminishing salmon returns.

The real problems are:

1. The ******* dams
2. The ******* pollution
3. The fishermen are catching too many ******* salmon

Really its like loggers blaming the lack of trees on woodpeckers...

NOOOO!!!!!absolutely not!! It is NOT right for people to kill sea lions.Come on,its just fish!!!!Other endangered species are manatees, humpbacks, and others!!!!Manatees are my favorite animal, and I would hate to see them become endangered!!!But my Dad says that people should move them to a different region, because people could lose their jobs, and it could really effect the economy. Ariel:I don't think people should kill sea lions, just chose one of the advice.
