I bet you are applying for a camp counselor position!! I did this years ago....and I think the best thing to do is to empathize with the camper....telling them you understand how hard it must be to be away from home. Encourage them to talk about it and to, maybe, write a letter home. Also tell them that in two weeks (or so) when it is time to go home....they will be just as upset about leaving camp as they are now about not being at home!!

I'm a little confused? Are you asking for yourself or are you considering being a camp councelor? When I was young I got very homesick. The night before I was scheduled to go to a camp I was packed and ready. But I spent the evening crying and throwing up and could not go because I got so homesick at even thinking about going. Looking back I wish I would have been made to go and learned to deal with this problem. Or maybe not. But it was very difficult for a long time. I could not even stay overnight with friends. I could be fine during the day but when evening came I started getting anxious and called Mom and Dad and they would drive to pick me up. Keeping active was a great help. Maybe that's why it mostly happened at night. All activity had stopped and I would start thinking and crying.

Give him/her his favorite foods. There is much comfort in food. If it is acceptable and if the age is right, a good long rocking hug and an "I love you." and read them a story or read from a book they may have brought. Keep them busy and play lots of fun thinking games to get their mind off of home.

Arrange a home care package and visit home on occasion (depending on the distance). Join groups and make friends.
