I am not too sure about the rental provisions in thier law, but I can sure see why this sudden change to their community made the townfolk pretty desparate.
What do you think?

MEXICAN, your parents aren't in Hazelton. It IS possible that a certain element has taken over there.

summermoondancer - it is specific types of crimes. The only two murders in a while, or something, violence and drugs. When you put in less damaging crime you can say 'there is a lot of non illegal immigrant crime' but it does sound like a lot of the change was from illegals.

I am from Pa and am familiar with this area. It is sad what has happened to many of the small towns in that area. Old family towns are now toilets. These are people who for the most part have lived there all their life,as have their parents and now their children. People who would never question their safety and wouldn't even lock their doors. Now,in a matter of a few years, you can't even walk out on the street and feel safe. It isn't just Hazelton, the entire area has been invaded. It isn't an affluent area and the rents are cheap, which is probably what is drawing alot of them in. My boyfriend lives in that area, his town also is seeing an enormous increase in gang activities. Long time residents are scared and are trying to sell their homes and get out, only no one is buying them. Rapes,drugs,murder..all things that were almost unheard of 5 years ago are now common.
It is sad that in just a few years time,a quiet area can become like this. I sure hope Hazelton wins this one. Only problem is,they will just move on and ruin another town and it's long time residents.

Wow! More than ever, I hope Hazleton wins this case! I wish legislation could be enacted that would allow ALL known gang members, especially if they are illegal immigrants, to be picked up and immediately deported, no questions asked. As well, even those who may be here legally, if they are in gangs and have a citizenship from another country, we should be able to deport them and remove their US citizenship. It is unbelievable what the gangs are getting away - the brazenness. And it is very scarey, how they are growing and nothing seems to stop them. I bet there are many more towns and cities who are going through this same terror from gangs and who are watching this case with bated breath, just waiting to copy Hazleton's new laws as soon as they feel they can do so unchallenged.

I think Hazeltons mayor should run for president,I think it is about time a mayor stands up for his city and I hope they win this case so other towns will stop being so damned politacally correct.I live in a town of about 5,000,its a freeway town and I work in a motel,I see hoards of illegals renting rooms at the motel where I work, sometimes 30 to a room making their way into this country, they have no respect, they trash the rooms and move on with no way to trace them, and the law does nothing. The motel rights it off as another tax right off,and life goes on for now.

The problem is that the crime stats don't reflect this article. At the time that the Hispanic population has been increasing there it seems that the overall crime rate dropped and that only a small fraction of the crimes were committed by undocumented immigrants. Don't always believe the garbage they spoon feed you investigate for yourself into the truth.

No. It sounds like a large, gang infested city to me. The gang expert's testimony is particularly interesting.

I think it is a bad situation but I did not see testimony that illegal immigrants were recruiting other illegal immigrants. If US born hispanic gang members are actively recruiting illegals that is just sad.

Everything that have to do against gangs don't matter who they are... I am OK it should be done long time ago...Criminals need to be put away. It need to be done something about violent people...
That's why I moved from LA to Texas so far here where I live is no gangs etc. Is very safe....
But this is related to inmigration issue. So I say no all illegal inmigrants are bad.

No not typical traits of a small town but I've seen once calm communities be turned into a nightmare within a 2 yr. period so it doesn't surprise me. It's happening in alot of areas...street by street, subdivision by subdivision, it's not becomming part of a community....it's running people out to take over towns.

The gang members need to be thrown out or jailed. They give a bad name to the undocumented immigrants that are just trying to live their lives.
Listen, my parents are illegal and they would love nothing more than to become Americans. So all that bullshit about them not wanting to assimilate is wrong.
